Dale Jr. Wants #8

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has made a plea to keep the No. 8 when he leaves Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season. His grandfather, Ralph, raced under the No. 8 and Junior has used it since entering the Cup series in 1999. But Dale Earnhardt Inc. holds the rights to the number, which is leased each season from NASCAR.He's yet to formally ask his stepmother, Teresa, to relinquish the number and wasn't sure he has a realistic chance of obtaining it.
"Regardless if we do or we don't, it would be great to keep the eight," he said. "I'm sure my fans would appreciate that. You kind of have to keep the mind-set that you might have to change numbers, so you start looking at other numbers and other things that might be interesting to you.
"There are a lot of numbers out there that I could use or would use or would like to use. It would be kind of cool."
Asked if he already had a contingency plan, Earnhardt said nothing sticks out.
"You've got to look at everything," he said. "I'd like to design the cars myself and get into how the cars look themselves. So I'd like to be a big part of not only the decision of what number we are but how the number itself and how the car itself looks with regards to how the sponsor feels about that.
"They might not like my ideas, so we'll have to see."

They might give him the number. That Max( can't remember his last name) said they were willing to discuss it.
As far as everything else he wants to have a hand in. Geez why didn't he just move his own team up to cup. Then he could have a say in the design and all that.

I have always heard his Grandfather used the #8. Someone on another forum last night said that wasn't true. I did a search of the #8 history and couldn't find anywhere he drove it. Dale Sr drove the 8 in a Busch race and won Rick Hendrick his first race. I challenge someone to find where Ralph Earnhardt drove the #8. The 8 is Jr now. It would seem odd to see him in another number.

Truth be known, and I'm sure Bob and RD can verify this, I do not believe that Ralph ever drove the #8 in the cup series. He drove the #8 in the lower tier of series. So even though I accepted the challenge an dtold th etruth ... it wasn't the full truth.

I'll punish myself.

Re: Dale Jr. Wants #8

Have they said he drove it in the cup series? Maybe they just meant thats the one he used most.

Re: Dale Jr. Wants #8

To the best of my limited knowledge Ralph never drove the number 8 in the cup series. He only drove in 51 cup races anyway. He never wanted to venture far from home or the dirt tracks.
