Andretti To Drive For Petty

The Associated Press

John Andretti is returning to Petty Enterprises for the third time in his career.

The 44-year-old nephew of longtime IndyCar star and 1967 Daytona 500 winner Mario Andretti will be in the Petty team’s No. 45 Dodge for four of the next five NASCAR Nextel Cup races, beginning this week at Michigan International Speedway.

He will be filling in for Kyle Petty, who is taking a sabbatical from racing to work as an analyst on TNT’s telecasts of the races.

That's Racin' | 06/13/2007 | For Andretti, it's 'exciting for me to go back home' with Petty plans

I hope Petty Enterprises has a good development driver waiting in the wings. I doubt Kyle will be back next year, except on a part time basis as his announcing duties allow.

John's a good middle of the pack driver. But PE needs someone to give them a shot in the arm .. Labonte hasn't done it and John's not that kind of driver.

What happened with the kid who stood in for Kyle last week - the ARCA race winner they made such a big deal about on TNT?

I was hoping he would be in it. At least then they might have had a chance of not wrecking as much.

Chad McCumbee...

He did what was expected of him last week. He finished the race, was in the top 25 (25th), stayed out of everyone's way and learned a lot.

BTW, Chuck. Did you know Chad played the part of Junior in the movie "3"?

No I did not, Bob. Interesting. Of course, I haven't seen 3 yet (gulp!)... but anyway, yeah, that's the kid. So he was just a one-shot deal, then?

Actually I think he is going to drive 3 races while Kyle is out. He and John are sharing the races.
