That past champions thing is really getting out of hand. Dangle enough money out there, and next we'll see DW embarrassing himself.

I don't like the provisional rule and wish they would do away with it. But as long as they have it,why not use it. Not like he's the only team doing it.

Watching DW make a fool of himself is better than having to listen to him make a fool of himself

I think the past champion rule is something Nascar will work on for 2008

I wish they would. But look how long it took them to go from unlimited to 6 a year. As much as I wish they would get rid of it completely, I don't think they ever will.

Re: Mikey will get in anyway he can, lol.

that was created in the late 80's when the king failed to qualify for a race, he was still a big name draw when there was as many fans or superstar drivers.

I believe it has run its course and needs to be terminated.
as for mikey he's just using the rules to his best advantage just like any team would

I don't think when the rule was first made it was thought someone would use it all the time. With the way the sport has grown and sponsors wantin to be in a race and new teams starting, it was just inevitable. So NA$CAR cut back the usage.

I dont believe that rule was created for Richard Petty. That is what a friend of mine told me when they come up with it. We were on our way to the race at North Wilksboro and had the radio on. The anouncer said "wonder what Darrel Waltrip thinks about Richard using the spot he got them to add for him. LOL. By the way my friend was a DW fan.

Amen, Don.

How about NASCAR putting a ten-year limit on this Past Champions stuff? For example, this year, if you haven't been a Series Champion since 1996, you don't get the free pass. Works for me.

Your friend is correct. Back in...? 1987, I believe, Richard had a very long consecutive starts going and he failed to qualify and had used up his allotment of provisionals (At that time NASCAR had some weird formula where a driver earned a provisional for every so many races he qualified for). At least two drivers offered to give up their seats and let him start the race so he could keep his string going but Richard, showing a degree of character almost totally lacking in today's "New NASCAR," respectfully declined.

I believe NASCAR instituted the silly Champion's Provisional Rule within the next four or five races.

BTW, your friend has my most deeply felt and sincere condolences on his DW affliction.

Have to disagree with you on this one Bob. I hate the past champion provisional. Terry labonte won the championship in 1996 and, for the most part, he is not racing any longer. I would gues the almighty dollar brought him out for the few he'll run this year.

At best if they went to the previous year I would consider that very generous. There is no competition required in a gift.

We don't disagree at all, Steve.

I was merely going on the assumption that NASCAR has this unnatural obsession with giving people free rides. I just thought I'd make the distasteful a little more palatable.

Thanks Bob. I had this fear that you were on the verge of something really bad. I'd rather see my boy Kevin be given a free pass instead of the likes of Richard Petty just because he is a past champ. It could happen you know !!!
