(a) Jeffy did not come from a rural, stock car background, but rather was literally raised to be a race driver (provide his parents with a very comfortable retirement?). This, with his youth and reasonably rapid success in Cup drew many "fans" to think he was an "outsider," and "hadn't paid his dues. Jeff publicly shed tears at his first win and when he won his first Championship. This, coupled with the way the media reported his displeasure whenever he felt his car wasn't performing to his satisfaction, caused many to consider him a chronic "whiner." To my knowledge Jeffy-Pooh has never whined any more, or less, than any other NASCAR driver of some renown. (b) Jeffy is the poster child for the "New NASCAR." He came on the scene at a time when NASCAR was undergoing massive change, with both its rules, its advertising and its drivers. He is seen as a usurper of Dale Earnhardt Senior's lofty position in NASCAR history. (Funny thing here. When Sr. was alive his ardent followers and his detractors about evened out, 50/50. Now that he's gone you're hard pressed to find anyone who claims to have disliked Sr. Now it appears that he was almost universally adored? Oh well, almost every 60's generation flower child claims to have been at Woodstock and a surprising number of 60's and 70's military vets claim in-country Viet Nam experience? ...I digress) Many of the most vocal detractors of Jeffy are card-carrying members of the "Red Army." Dale Jr. fans. Again, IMNSVHO they just need to get the Hell over it! Quote:
Keep in mind we were ALL new at one time. I was "new" back in 1958. I asked a lot of questions (we didn't have computer message boards then, we asked in smoke signals) and read a LOT of magazines.

OK Bob mark this down somewhere for future reference. I did not like his driving style at all. Back then, and before, I was not a DRIVER fan but a racing fan. He was one of the drivers I didn't care for at all because of the way he drove. The crash & pass game was alive and well even back then. I can appreciate his drive to make NASCAR bigger but that is another subject.

For the record, I was ambivolent about Dale. I did respect the Hell out of leadership in the driver ranks, his habit of publically telling NASCAR when he thought that they were in the wrong, and for his honesty, as exemplified by this quote: "I may not have the car to pass a guy, but if I can get to his bumper I can get by him." I find it ironic that in so many cases, hindsight causes a great amount of people to be involved in events, or have beliefs, which, at the time, were considered questionable or historic. In fact, it was less than a year ago I was discussing our Presidents with a man who said he was 36 years old and remembered exactly where he was, and what he was doing when they announced the assasination of JFK? "I'm Captain Bob of the History PD and YOU'RE BUSTED!!!" |

They came on WLS (Chgo's #1 R&R station in 1963) with the announcement just as the "O's" were leaving for lunch at the "O Club.". The CDR was still in and jumped up and told him what I heard. He asked first, "Are you sure?" Then, "Where the Hell did you hear that?", then "Give me the radio." We then spent the next 2-3 hours huddled around my little 6 Xster listening to the news. I never did get chewed out for having the unauthorized radio. |

2. Isn't this question popular. People hate Jeff Gordon because he came in the sport and had success early. Some fans said he didn't work his way up, which is entirely not true, some say he hasn't paid his dues, which isn't true either. Some say Gordon is a "whiner". Now yes, Jeff did complain about his car when it wasn't performing well, but that's not being a whiner, that's giving feedback to the team; make the cars better. It's a variety of things, but Gordon earned his haters in the Earnhardt/Gordon rivalry. Sr fans didn't accept Jeff once he started to win 7-13 races a year, and totally dominating. As you will learn, some fans don't like drivers/teams dominating. Why has Jimmie Johnson earned haters all of the sudden? As they say, "as long as they are making noise, you are doing something right." 3. I can't give you any real info on fantasy leagues, as I've never participated in one. But from what I've heard, they are fun. I'm surprised you didn't ask why there are so many Jr fans. Boy would that have created a debate in this thread. |
