GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - Junior Johnson's back in the liquor business. But this time, it's legal.
About six decades ago, Johnson was running moonshine from his father's Wilkes County still, earning a reputation as a top bootlegger on the back roads of North Carolina. His liquor lawbreaking even earned him 11 months in jail during the mid-1950s.
Johnson eventually parlayed those driving and mechanical skills into a racing career that made him a NASCAR pioneer and legend.
Now, the 76-year-old is promoting a new version of moonshine, partnering with Piedmont Distillers to create "Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon Carolina Moonshine."
While just as potent as the illegal sugar-based white lightning the Johnson family cooked up, Johnson said the new version is corn-based.
The 80 proof (40-percent alcohol) product retails for about $20. And for those with mild stomachs, the master recommends mixing it with orange or cranberry juice.
