Bill Elliott to drive # 21

Bill Elliott will now be driving the 21 car for the Wood Brothers, filling in for Ken Schrader. Schrader gets the boot because he can't get/keep the car in the top 35. What do you think about this as far as the owners hiring past champs to make sure they get in ???

I don't think it's right. If they are drivng the car full time, thats alittle bit different. But I really think they should do away with the champions provisional altogether. Make them qualify or go home too.

Re: Bill Elliott to drive # 21

Ohhhhh, I just read the question the right way. As for the owners doing this, if they are putting a past champ in there for so many races cause they automatically are guaranteed a starting spot, then I think that guarantee should be taken away. If they are not racing at least 2/3's of the season, they should have no guaranteed starting position.

Well you can't fault Wood Brothers for taking advantage of the provisional. But this will be a prime example of a reason to get rid of the past champion's provisional. Sucks for Schrader though. But like most (I think) of us on this forum, they should qualifty each week with the fastest 43 racing.

The Wood team is now EXACTLY MWR. No better, no worse with regards to "back dooring" in to the race.

I don't like the past champion provisional at but Bill Elliott won his last championship in 1988. 19 years ago and he still gets a free pass ??? Bull crap !!!

The only difference I see between them is that at least Jarrett is racing the full season.

True. But come race time he won't do any better than Ken did. I know they replaced him cause he couldn't keep the car in the top 35 and I hope Elliott don't either.
If they won't do away with the provisonal, they should at least only go back just a few years, not just as long as you won one.

I feel for Schrader .. don't think the problem is the driver, though....

More power to them. Hiring past champs for the provisional is a bennie the past champs have and are willing to exploit for $$$ that owners are willing to spend when their teams aren't performing. But it doesn't make the team or the equipment any better. At least now it's "6 and out"...
