| Re: Nascar Needs Competition? you have to go to your local tracks if ya wanna see stock cars race... Nascar racing has ( and I agree with you) become more about advertising and parity... than makes and body styles... I'm going tomorrow night to watch Matt Martin race at bronson motor speedway but I'll have the tivo set for the truck race at Martinsville...

Re: Nascar Needs Competition? While I would like to see another stock car racing conglomerate and a seperate league returning back to the roots of the Bill France Sr.'s vision that has, unfortunately long since gone...(bet he's doing 360 in the grave), it is a very, very difficult thing to accomplish. If memory serves me right, it was tried way back in the 50'-60's and Bill fired and black-balled all of those who demonstrated the unmitigaed gall to come up with such and idea. Many careers were either truncated or outright ruined by the NASCAR ifedom. This probably again be the case if it was attempted. The France family has been very manipulative in almost all of the existing race tracks...either owning them or making sure water-tight contracts exist. Additionally, most of the sponsors (likely weak-kneed) may not have the guts to 'jump' with the teams/drivers. The most likely outcome may be much the came as the Canadian Football League...great in the idea, but far and away too costly and would eventually peter out. If, however, many of the teams, sponsonrs, drivers and owners manifested the move, outlasted the heat and eventually were successful (not-withstanding the attorneys buzzing around this lucretive nest egg of cancelled contracts, etc.), a more pure form of racing would likely result. The most important support would realistically have to come from the fans...boycotting (person cotting in the case of the distaff set) the current schedule and attending the newer schedule would be a mandatory thing and would serve most to thwart the existing 'kindom of France.' Would be dirty and nasty and few would win out in the end...but then, aint that kinda how NASCAR got started in the first place? If nothing els, the attempted move might serve to put the current empire on notice....that teams, drivers, sponsors and most importantly fans, are disenchanted by the current France reign. Would I like to see it happn...You Bet! But it won't. Too bad...Stock car, as mentioned above is still available at your local track...so, it's not yet a dying sport....not just yet. FYI Martine and DE jr. Rock!

Re: Nascar Needs Competition? Wampinrock ... you and I must work from the same brain. I, once again, agree with you but with some subtle differences in ideas. I'm not an open wheel fan or follower of the series so I don't know the names or places but there was a revolt with them and a new series was born. It can happen but I think with NASCAR it would be more difficult because stock car racing is far bigger than Indy car racing. With that said one of the reasons NASCAR is bigger is because of the sponsorship dollar. France and company bend to them as if they were Gods. In the financial world of NASCAR I guess they are. I can't imagine Dupont or Coke or Bud saying lets try another series. There would have to be an agreement by all the big sponsors to make a move. Next they would have to find places to race and that would more than likely lead them back to short tracks that are better suited for the saturday night locals. Over time it could be done but once again it would take big bucks and that seems to spawn even more big bucks. If it didn't create a profit then the investors wouldn't even consider leaving the safe womb of France's NASCAR.

Re: Nascar Needs Competition? If indeed we work with the same brain, you may need to seek counsel...you really don't want to work with the likes of what I have...my mind wanders, finds obscure inuendo and is basically troublesome wandering into the abstract...kinda a George Carlin thing...but thanks for the complement. Another thought crossed my mind while reading your response....it occurs to me that, because of the '50-60's attempted revolt and the Indy-Cart split that you alluded to, that mony, if not most of the drivers may be bound not to "flee" by crontractorial decree. While I don't know for sure, it seems likely that the France's have forseen this as a possibility and have created a condition that makes it illegal to split and run...makes sense, but again, I am not knowing...maybe others may have some insight. As to the wretched brain I'm locked with; I find equal entertainment among Shakespear, Motzart, Larry the Cable Guy, Johnny Cash and Bill O'Reilly...what a mix!!

Re: Nascar Needs Competition? Once again you have brought up some valid points as far as contracts go, BUT ...... What if Rousch, Hendricks, Yates, Petty and other (all) multi car teams decided to go their own way ? Granted they may not all do it at one time but any contractual obligations that go along with NASCAR have to end at some point. I'm sure from the business end of it NASCAR has made it very difficult for that to happen but there is always that possibility. I don't recall how the Indy cars did it but it did happen out of the desire for changes. As for one brain ... yes we are both in trouble. I'm not a classical music fan but I follow you with the rest of your likes. One of my other great loves in hot air ballooning. It's one of those things you just gotta try.
