Steve, you nailed the "announcers" who aren't. I do want to know the technical things, not the gossip. Sometimes it's interesting to peer down at a cut tire, a mangled fender or a hole in the grill.

At least with MRN I can "gin up my own pictures"...
It probably does have something to do with age, Duck.

As far as the "announcers" go ("announcers used very loosely), today Mike Joy is about it. Dr. Jerry and Dick Berggren are great in the pits but keep them out of the booth. One of my major complaints is "The King of Hair Gel," Dick Weber. He's every bit as aggravating as DW and his Boy Wonder, Larry Mac.

MRN... You really know where my buttons are, don't you? I used to really enjoy listening to MRN but lately... Agggghhhhh!!!

Barney Hall (God bless him, for he is a legend and treasure in motorsports) has entered the realm of Ken Squire and often comes across as being as confused as an Amish electrician. He seems virtually incapable of uttering anything vaguely construed as negative about NASCAR or its personnel. (Of course, since MRN is owned, lock, stock and barrel by ISC, SURPRISE!)

Champion NASCAR-hugger, Dave Moody usually doea little but simply scream into the mike.

I swear, if I hear Mike Post end an interview question with the phrase, "Tell me about it'" one more time, I'll kick my cat!

Re: Dale Jr going to???

I'm a Jr fan and I've even gotten tired of hearing about it. As soon as they start talking about it, I change the channel.

From my perspective ... that's not a bad thing.

I generally hold the news media in much the same contempt as you apparently do, Steve. I keep going back to the often mentioned incident of 1898, when NY Herald owner William Randolph Hearst sent Richard Harding Davis to Havana to report on civil unrest and the war. Davis sent a wire back to Hearst reporting that the Cubans showed mild dissatisfaction with the US government and there was no war. Hearts wired back: "If the is no war, then make one!" That ideology has continued to this day, all the way up to Bernard Shaw, Wolf Blitzer, Geraldo Rivera, et.al.

Luckily for us, almost never will we run across this type of media hack in NASCAR (and mostly all sports) reporting. There are a select few actual journalist who write a "Reader's Digest" version of the event, do a couple of personal interviews and take selected sound bites and put these to print, then put the whole thing out on the AP wire for any newspaper to pick up and use to fill their page space.

What most of us read are the various articles similar to those posted on Jayski's "Articles" site. The ones written by people affiliated with espn.com, nbc.com, <insert newspaper>.com, Marty Smith, Pete Pistone, David Poole, Matt McLaughlin, etc., etc. On rare occasional some of these good folk will contribute some actual news but generally what we read is their particular opinion, which often has very little more insight than the stuff we post here on GTG.

They try to pass it off as "news" but it just ain't. Most often it is just a point of view from someone who attends more races and is around more race personnel than we mere mortals. It's just written opinions coming from a person who has a better word processor than we do, who has a bigger thesaurus than we do, and who has a slightly better grasp of the accepted rules of grammar than we do.

I have no personal animosity for these folks. They just act like they know what they're talking about. The ones who make sense I take seriously (more or less). The ones who don't make sense, I just laugh at.
Man, you're good. Are you a writer or have a background in writing? Sometimes, you write as though you're a rocket scientist! I love it!

Re: Dale Jr going to???

did you give him your opinion or just throw it out into cyberspace in hopes he would see it?

either way, I'm sure he considered it .. but chose to do what he wanted.
