Listed Car Owners

With Nascar saying they are gonna in a few years limit the car owners to 4 ( I think) teams, do you think it's right for a owner to put his car's in other people's names? I understand the reason for limiting them, that way you don't eventually end up with just a handful of different teams. But take Jack Rousch, everyone knows he has the 6,16,17,26 and 99 teams. But only on one is listed as the owner. So does that mean that he can still have 3 more teams? If so, what good is it doing for Nascar to limit them on how many they can have?

Bill France Sr. had it right. In 1958 he forced Carl Kiekhaeffer out of NASCAR because he showed up with as many as eight teams at some of the races and was ruining the sport. (Karl pulled some other crap too, but that's another story). When Kiekhaeffer left Bill Sr. decreed that no owner could have more than two race teams entered in any race. That worked well until 1987 when Bill Jr. let The Felon have three teams (DW #17, Geoff Bodine #5, Benny Parsons #35), with his father obstensively "owning" one of them.

That was the year NASCAR's downward spiral of high-rolling mega-teams that we have today passed the point of no return. Now NA$CAR will implement restriction on teams ONLY if it directly or indirectly benefits NA$CAR.

Re: Listed Car Owners

It seems like before long the only owners will be Hendrick, DEI, Richard Childress, Jack Rousch and Ray Evernham, and of course Petty. Of course those owners alone already have almost half the field now.

You forgot the one who might prove to be the biggest roller of them all, Bobby Ginn. Ginn is a major player in Florida, the Carolinas, Arizona, Colorado, Vermont and New Hampshire the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.

We can be kind of glad Del Webb is gone. This "New NASCAR" is the kind of thing Del would have loved to be involved in.

Not that it relates much to this thread but his holdings in VT are more than likely a tax write off. He is in one of the most economically depressed areas of the state. It's been that way for years and years and I see no big change happening anytime soon.

Re: Listed Car Owners

I think NA$CAR is on a slippery slope now with owners. It's gotten so confusing who the actual owner of a car (number) is today that they're gonna have to come up with a definition of car ownership.

Remember, even though JG is listed as owner of 48, Hendrick owns a percentage and the team all gets their checks from Hendrick. Oh yeah, need we forget that JG is also under contract to Hendrick to drive a Hendrick car?

Then there's the Waltrips and the Harvicks and the Roushs and ....

Yates and Rousch have "an agreement"....

Boris is an independent with close Roush connections....

And Robby is poised to go multi-team...

Good points (as usual), Ducky.

The team ownership/sponsorship thing has grown so convoluted that I see only one solution on the horizon, and boy, is it FUGLY.

Franchising. Eeeecchhh!

My feelings on franchising are best described by that renown paragon of virtue, film maker and sage of our time, Snoop Dog; "Snizzle Gizzle!!!"

Re: Listed Car Owners

In the sports world parody is a big part of what sports is, The NCAA Tournament, The world series, and yes even the NFL subtract the super bowl has parody, and back then NASCAR Had parody, from the power Earnhardt years when Kulwicki won a heated championship, against a two legends, Davey Allison and Dale Earnhardt, it was a great championship which at a point of my life I wanted to be like Kulwicki and do what he did, but we dont have so much parody these days with people like Hendrick and Roush dominating what cars are on the track, which I agree much more to have more chance to stop the parody in the sport, we must make these teams smaller. It will give more chances that a one car team to be in the hunt, because more bigger teams will have to look to the small one car teams to draft with and work in to the pit stops at critical times of the race. It makes more stories behind the wins, more futures for those drivers in those cars, and will create more great finishes and more history, doing this is one true step to people having that Alan Kulwicki type person to do it again and win the nextel cup, its more possible more than ever.
