How to Become a NASCAR Driver

How, in your opinion, do you get in to NASCAR or any big league racing?
because i'm too old for quarter midgets and too young to even drive
but racing is my dream and i need to know where to start
i already have some options i could take but i need more advice

Learn the chassis first. What happens when you add 1 pound or air to the R/R tire. What does one turn one the track bar do? Learn that first and the driving will easier because you can comunicate.

Track time. Drive/race something. If driving/racing is not an immediate option (it ALL costs fair amount of money - our QM investment for two cars was appreciatbly over $10,000), get involved. You can join QM at any age and work the events. Get acquainted with a team owners (After you are a member) and likely you'll find some looking for help. The vehicles are small, but they've near all of the adjustments and options as the "real things".

Quarter Midget tracks/clubs will in some cases run 1/2 midgets. You're likely not too old for that. Believe 18 years was permitted in 1/2 midget - do check this. Find your local QM club at You are on the FRONT PAGE of QuarterMidgets.com. Since many of these folks will be looking to "graduate" to the next level, club members are a good source for your local "next steps".

Check your area for Legends, Bandeleros, Mini Cup, Micro Sprint, and indeed Karts.

There are many, many ways to get involved and start the learning process. Sitting in front of a computer or TV ain't one of 'em.

I think that you have to start with go-carts when you are 4 or 5 years old. And have parents willing to sacrafice absolutely everything they have.

Re: How to Become a NASCAR Driver

Just asked dear ol' dad your question and he said to learn a little something about what you're driving (he means mechanically) and get seat time in whatever's available. "Drive, drive, and drive some more" is what he said. You can't be any good at anything without practice. I don't know how old you are, but Tim Macreadie (sp?) didn't start racing until he was in his early 20's, and has raced only on dirt. He's now, at the age of 33, a developmental driver for RCR (I think it's RCR), just starting on pavement/asphalt now. Very rare, but it happens. So go out and find something to drive and then every time you wreck it, and you will, put it back together yourself. If I can do all the basics it takes to get a car going and keep it that way, so can you. That way when somebody puts jet fuel in your tank you'll probably notice. Good luck!

Re: How to Become a NASCAR Driver

Other than having talent to focus and drive fast the most important thing is to be able to communicate to a crew what the car is doing using the seat of your pants.

Re: How to Become a NASCAR Driver

I discovered long ago nothing beats seat time. That and turning wrenches. If you want it bad enough you will go out and get it.
