seems to my eye, NASCAR is filled with more symbolism then any other sport

some fans only cheer for the make of car they drive (how more symbolic can you be)

some fans buy products that sponsor drivers they like (i remember reading about a woman that only bought Tide because of Ricky Rudd)

Beyond that, NASCAR has the Pace Car, the Grand Marshall, Victory Lane .......all un-needed symbols from the past

Certainly wont get into a urninating contest here but what sport isn't symbolic of the past ??? From my perspective a walk in baseball is a true waste of time. It is symbolic to the pitcher because he is saying that I refuse to allow you a hit. It is symbolic for the batter because he can say, you're afraid of me.

Symbolism abounds in all sports. If they played the meat of the sport, what would we do with the rest of Sunday afternoon ??? Talk with the spouse ?????

Hmmm... Interesting perspectives all. I'm not sure that merchandising equals symbolism but I can see your points, all of which can be seen as valid.

FWIW, I thought the Green Jacket would be the most valued "trophy" of all.
