What about the #7, #28 and others I'm sure. What about the 43 ?? Stats wise he holds the record. It's just a number ??????
I think drivers' car numbers that have died in racing should be retired. It would be a show of respect and honor to those who were lost doing something they loved to do, race.

You know, I've been thinking about this number thing. The drivers of 7 and the 28 were not killed during a race, and they certainly weren't the icon Sr. was. As for the 43, Petty retired, same for Rusty in the 2.

The 8 was Jr.'s grandfather's number. It's nice to keep the history alive.

There's just something about that 3!

As I noted "it baffles me". You are not wrong in your opinion. I just don't see the number as something that is a big deal ... but that is just me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure you will, but don't they retire numbers in other sports?

I know that has nothing to do with NASCAR, but I thought they did.

Yes they do and unless they are planning on using 101, 102, 103 and so on then they better be careful. They're gonna run out of numbers and at some point down the road the only people who remember that the #3 belonged to Dale Earnhardt will be Dale Jr.'s great grandchildren.

I feel the same about retiring all numbers in all sports. It's great to honor the number and the person today, but you gotta let loose someday.

Kyle Busch just cracked up his Busch car !!!!

Actually NASCAR owns the number but since RCR leases the number he has the right to do whatever he wants with it. Basically he pays every year to keep the number off the track.

Re: Deal or no deal, Teresa

With NASCAR owning the number, have they ever discussed retiring numbers officially?

Re: Deal or no deal, Teresa

I thought this thread was about "deal or no deal Theresa" ?! I understand the number debate. But will she give Jr his deal? Any Thoughts?

I'm sure others might have a better recollection but I believe they said they were not in the business of retiring numbers.

Sorry, RustyFan. We do tend to get off topic sometimes. But it looks like Junior may have been offered control of DEI.

Johnny Sauter is now driving the # 70. No one is fighting for that one.

Tonight ... 4/21/07 Rick Hendricks is not at the track ?????????

True, but most weekends he is. And when he isn't he calls them on the cell phone to say way to go. Maybe when DEI wins one again we'll find out if she at least does that much.
