PPS,
There's actually 3 sets of points that are "important" as far as NA$CAR $$$ go:
  • Driver Points - for Driver Championship & Rookie of the Year and now due to the Chase, the 1st driver outside the chase gets a million bucks (that's why Tony was whoopin' everybody's butts after he missed the Chase last year - a million bucks goes a long way to soothe injured pride...)
  • Owner Points - Owner points go to the car number, no matter who is driving (can't say individual car 'cause each car number may actually have 20 or more cars -- road course, short track, speedway, super speedway, etc. -- that will compete during any given season.) Owner points also determine the sequence that haulers are parked in the pits, which garage space the team gets, and the order of tech and qualifying. And, if the qualifying is rained out, the starting line up is by owner points. And the top owners gets a nice little check + trophy at the awards banquet.
  • Manufacturer Points - this is where Chevy and Ford get to top each other advertising-wise...unfortunately not enough Dodges, Pontiacs (and now Toyotas) run in each race to accumulate enough points to propel their particular make to the front. I believe Chevy has won the past several years simply because more Chevys are in more races than any other make (and they win races...)
Then there's various contengency prize things like:
  • Bud Pole
  • USG Improving the Finish
  • Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew
  • Commit Lozenges "Commit to Win"
  • Sunoco Diamond Performance
  • Clevite Engine Builder
  • Checkers/Rally's Double Drive-Thru Challenge
  • Wix Filters Lap Leaders
  • DirectTv Crew Chief of the Year
All of it somehow translates into $$$...

it's been my experience, placing a bet is easy .. making a choice what to bet on requires choosing blindly (includes emotional influences) or information. the most successful gamblers know all the trivia associated with their bet. I provided information aka, trivia.

but I apologize for hijacking this thread .. was merely clarifying apparent misunderstanding with owner and manufacturer's points.

Again, WOW! I continue to be amazed at how much I can learn from this forum.

I've always understood Driver Points, for the most part, but I had no idea that Owner Points dictated where the haulers are parked, which garage stall they get, and the order of inspection and qualifying. Do the cars with the most Owner Point get to "choose", or is it dictated by NASCAR? Man this sport is complicated!

Speaking of the "Chase", I'm sure a thread was started when it was first implemented. If not, I'm gonna start one because I'd love to know what other fans think of it.

Thanks for the info!

The parking of the haulers, inspection order and qualifying is in order of points, i.e., NA$CAR decides. The garage stall selection is by owner choice (owner's like to have their teams together.) At some tracks where there's limited garage space, some teams have to set up shop on the garage tarmac. When the CTS, Busch and Cup are all at one track on the same weekend and there's not enough hauler/garage space for all, the CTS get parked first, then the Busch. After CTS race is over, they leave and Cup takes their spots - it's worth the price of a ticket just to watch the dosey-doe.
