Having flipped his car - again - he sat upside down in the middle of the track watching lots of cars going really fast (ok, it's all relative - really fast was bearly a crawl by today's standards), at the mercy of the driver's, much like DJ. He got totally demolished. He likes the lucky dog. I think it needs to join Ol' Yeller. Take it back out behind the shed and shoot it.

Great story. Thankfully as you noted the speeds then versus todays speeds were far slower. Then again the safety equipment was less effective also so maybe slower speeds was a good thing. I wish the people in the booth would spend more time talking about issues like this instead of how poor Mikey is being beat on. I think that the lucky dog is technologically about as useful as a 386/33 MHZ computer. It was a good fix for the moment but with this advent of scoring loops there is just no need for this antique known as the lucky dog, AKA "Old Yeller"

I think it stinks. If you get a lap down for whatever reason, you should not get a "free pass" back on the lead lap. Last year at Watkins Glen was joke when Kyle Busch got FIVE Lucky Dogs and got back on the lead lap.

Re: Lucky Dog ... Just Curious

Don't like the lucky dog if you go a lap down you start on the inside row on any restart so if your fast enough then you can race your way back on the lead lap if your not fast enough then git the heck out of the way and let the boys race.

I thought it was a good idea when it first came out with no racing back to the yellow why not.But now I am not sure and it would not hurt me if they stopped doing it .

I do not have a problem with getting A lap back...but I agree that getting 5 laps back is totally wrong. Perhaps nascar should limit the laps anyone can get back, like they are limiting the Champion Provisionals. Maybe 1 lap back per race. If you lose a second lap...maybe you belong laps down.

Hmmmmmmmmm ... interesting ... and not a bad idea. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other, but I find the comments of this string very interesting.

I have no problem with gettin five laps back... if the boys were still racing back to the yellow. That meant they worked and earned it. The lucky dog is exactly that, LUCKY!

I still say if your down a lap you git the inside lane if your fast enough you'll race back on the lead lap if your not fast enough then you deserve to be a lap down. Go fast or go home..............

Oooooooooo ... good point! Lap down, start inside, pass the leader and haul a$$. No "luck" here, just talent and a good car.

That is an excellent way to put it troll. As you and RustyFan said, if you lose a lap, you might belong laps down. If you don't, well, you already get the prefered line on the leaders, so shouldn't you be able to get the lap(s) back that way? If you can't, you belong right where you are. Fair enough.

Re: Lucky Dog ... Just Curious

I haven't thrown my 2 cents in this issue.....

I think the Lucky Dog is........ A BUNCH OF CRAP! Kyle Busch getting 5 LUCKY DOGS? That is complete garbage, and thats coming from a HUGE HMS fan. The Lucky Dog rule is the worst rule NASCAR has ever enforced in my opinion.
