| Re: Cale Yarborough Hey nice to see someone else remembers a few of the older guys. Cale won the frst race I went to as a kid (was 10) in 1976 at Bristol. I was a self declared petty fan. I hated Cale from that day on. Now of course I respect him as a tough solid racer. See some of my earlier posts. You know as a kid I wouldn't eat supper when my mom served holly farms chicken!! Seriously! I remember the blizzard. I was at that race. I remember thinking man Cale just CAN'T win this race. I looked up and see Cale & Donnie sideways! Great day to be a Petty fan! He hadn't won in over a year and the place just went crazy! We had traveled from VA to FL in an RV a bunch of fathers and sons. On the way home we got stuck in that. I have pictures of state troopers in the median of I-95 having a snowball fight because traffic was simply stopped for hours. We didn't even know about the fight until Monday. I sometimes miss those older days of racing because it so much more fun and low key. Not so business and vanilla. For example, I remember lots of last lap crashes between the two lead cars. When was the last time that happened? Today they'd rather run second then take a chance on tearing up equipment and losing precious points. In the 70's and 80's it was all about the wins baby. |
