then comes someone like Toyota or Benz with enough bucks to field 7 or 8 teams and suddenly those 3 owners are scrambling 'cause there's outside forces threatening their empires and they go crying to the Joe Sanctioningbody (good one Wingkey) to do something .. now Joe has a legal and political problem of significant magnitude and no way to satisfy everybody....

why would Joe want to ever get himself into such a predicament?

two gives rich and poor alike equal opportunities. that's my choice.
I can give my feeling on this matter in two words: KARL KIEKHAEFFER. I FIRMLY believe that if NASCAR were true to its root and wanted to retain tradition the maximum number would be two (2).

However, NA$CAR cares nothing about tradition, and wants only to make major league stock car racing on an equal level with the other major stick&ball sports. Taking that into consideration, NA$CAR's future lies in franchise and to franchise profitably NA$CAR needs a minimum of owners and a maximum of dollars. That spells mega-teams and I guess NA$CAR has decided that four (4) is the magic number.

Re: Maximum # of cars per owner.

The #25 was always listed as owned by Papa Joe until he died. Then I think Ricky was listed as owner. I know he sort of took it over.

still, if you listed their drivers, they'd be a veritable who's who of stock car racing. for instance, Harry Ranier. these are the drivers who drove for him:
  • Buddy Baker
  • Gary Bettenhausen
  • Andy Hampton
  • Bobby Watson
  • Jim Vandiver
  • Lenny Pond
  • Bobby Allison
  • Benny Parsons
  • Joe Ruttman
  • Cale Yarborough
  • Davey Allison
  • Elton Sawyer (married Patty Moise)
  • Lance Hooper
  • Greg Sacks
if you've been around NASCAR for even a short time, you've heard some of these names...
Elton Sawyer. There's a name I was sure would never surface in a NASCAR discussion again. I haven't heard his name since he qualified on the front row at Wilkesboro 11 years ago.

That is certainly a who's who as you say, and we can take it a step further.

Who knew that Harry Melling fielded the car that Million Dollar Bill had most of his success in? Or that Benny Parsons won the 73 title with L.G. Dewitt? My point is, back in the proverbial day, if you knew how to run a race team, you had success. Now all you need is money and some business man who can run it for you. If you watched races during Ken Squire's prime, you couldn't avoid picking up knowledge of team owners like Melling and Dewitt.

I didn't know he was still at this NASCAR business (besides having been being in radio), Now I find out that he's also PA announcer back home at NHIS.

actually, I did. Bill is my #2 all time favorite driver - just wish he was able to do more to get Wood Bros out of the pickle they're in right now.

Re: Maximum # of cars per owner.

car ownership leads to sucess if you have a lot of cars thats why they dont want them to limit it to much but at the same time nascar doesnt want it to get out of hand so they limited it to 4.and in wy opinion 4 is good but 3 is even better.

Re: Maximum # of cars per owner.

i really dont understand anyone that voted owners cant have as many cars on the track as they can qualify

seems to me it would be exactly what you want

im totally surprised that if tomorrow Bill Gates decided he wanted to sink $500 million into a NASCAR Cup team with 8 drivers and the best of everything many here would not be in favor of it ....... i know i would be

Here's my analogy ... George Steinbrenner wants to hire 35 more players for his team. Is that OK ???

I wouldn't want to see that. If you let them have an unlimited number, looks like it wouldn't take long for there to be just a few owners.Probably HMS,DEI,Gibbs,Roush,RCR,and Penske would be your only owners in a few years. I don't think that would be to exciting.

I knew that... I am a fan Bill Elliot. I have a poster signed by him just after he left the #9, and was a guest of Melling Racing in 99' just after Harry passed on before the Michigan Race. Bill had a small tribute to Harry on his McDonalds car that race. My dad actually drank with Harry one time, but that is a different story for a different time for a different thread.
