I would say most famous being mainstream. Someone who a guy who doesn't know much about Nascar knows. Guys like Earndhart and Petty I assume.

In any sport if you ask who the best is, you look at the stats or the numbers of points etc. If you do that in NASCAR the answer is Richard Petty.

7 chamionships, 200 wins, 7 Daytona 500 vicotries.

But, if you were to ask for the most famous driver of any series you would have to go with a driver like Mario Andretti. He won in NASCAR, Indycars, F1. For that reason I would choose him.

Earnhardt Sr??? The only thing I gotta say about that is that....

IF you are the best at something (anything) you don't die doing it!

If Davey Allison was still around I'm sure there would be questions like...

"Who's Jeffey Gordon?"

"Who's Tony Stewart?"

And so on.

Gordon or Dale Sr may be the most famous.

To me, Petty will always be the best. People can always make the argument of different times, but he is, and always will be the King. He paved the way for others. In ability, Sponsors, Marketing, and just being a great ambassador of the sport. He is still the King! Just my 2 cents!
