Gift idea

Just when I thought that <insert favourite driver> bibs, panties, boxers, and slippers where as about as far as the NASCAR marketing weasels could go, I found something new. Jerry Wilson turned me onto this one on his fine diecastdude blog. As he points out, I bet the NASCAR marketers didn't figure out that this will produce fodder for an entire generation of stand up comedians.

I can just hear Jeff Foxworthy's next series of "You might be a redneck if..." one liners.

I can just see some precocious little tyke waddling into a family get-together proudly announcing "Jeff Gordon Sucks!"

At least they got Jay Leno to narrate it and not Oprah...

That would be awesome. The only cool thing that could come from that video.

NASCAR marketing weasels? Looks more like an individual or company using/paying NASCAR and other sports to make money.

Re: Gift idea

Why has my reply been ignored? Is it because I'm correct and the original post is about something that's not quite fact(another blame NASCAR thread) or am I all wet and NASCAR actually did this all by themselve just to bleed money for us poor suckers. Dam NASCAR for making money off football and all those other sports or colleges.

Easy Yelk, just cause their was not an immediate response does not mean you are being ignored. Maybe folks are just tryin to put things in perspective. I mean one could say The Na$car money ghouls are just trying to play into the whole image of the sport being "Family Friendly". It's just another way to gain the almighty dollar as they do noyt give a damn about the fans. On the other hand the Na$car brass could be gettin a nice fat pocket from just allowing their logo or drivers to be featured on the box or in the video.

Calm down and take a deep breath, my friend. Sometimes it takes people a little while to catch-up to and read all the posts. Now, about the issue at hand... this is a six of one, half a dozen of the other issue. Team Baby Entertainment has done this kind of stuff for all sorts of sports leagues and teams. They produce the DVDs and whatnot. Heck, they even spammed up in the past. But in order to produce the DVDs, they needed the NASCAR license, which means at some point the governing body of NASCAR had to approve the project and commit to selling rights to the DVD manufacturers. So it is manufactured by a third-party, but it would have had to have gotten NASCAR's blessing.

Re: Gift idea

My point, someone is making money using the NASCAR name/logo. These dvd's are not a product produced by NASCAR as the post was made out to be.
Something else I don't understand, why is it a sin for a company such as NASCAR to make money. Isn't that what business is all about. Besides, NASCAR or any business wouldn't stay in business long if it weren't for folks buying their product (there-in is the real problem or who's to blame, the people that buy the product).

Yep, I actually agree with you. NASCAR should merchandise as much of this kind of stuff as they can. It is their duty and obligation to make money and to increase their fanbase by as much as they possibly can. If this DVD can do either or both, more power to them. But I know at the heart of the argument is the issue whether or not NASCAR, in their attempt to increase profits and bring in new fans, is ignoring the very established fanbase which helped them reach their current level of popularity.

It would be very interesting to see the data from an independent, professional, demographic, assessment (Poll, survey, etc.) of the fanbase over a defined time period. Not that it would/could necessarily put absolute definition to "helped them reach their current level of popularity", but observations of the changes through points in time could be interesting. Even "popularity" would have more than one possible definition.

Interesting bit of data - I've a friend that owns two businesses in a very successful market that has been (the market) operating for about 75 years. One business is a pet store. Doing very well but not relevant here. Other is a combination tobacco and collectables store with 80%+ devoted to the collectables. Was, for a time, an excellent NASCAR collectables establishment. Wide range of offerings. "Current hot" through true "collectables". I was constantly doing walk throughs that many times resulted in purchases.

Today all NASCAR stuff gone. Why? Too many changes too fast. Sponsor changes, driver changes, driver and manufacturer changes. For those interested, NASCAR content replaced mostly by NFL items.

Too many "fad" fans (owners definition) that want/care about only the most popular driver driving their current manufacturers vehicle, wearing the most current sponsors colors. Owner of the business is "stuck" with what he buys after any change. There are some customers (but not enough to maintain the business on) that like to have in their collection all of the changes. The "historians" (again, owners description).

Above not offered in support of anyones perception / perspective of who NASCAR should play to ensure continued success, further racing, increased controversey, et al. Just a fact of a slice in life.

Re: Gift idea

I believe that is one of the points that has been constantly brought up in the conversations about who and why NASCAR caters to. It seems from general conversations that the fans that brought them to the level they are now enjoying have become the forgotten fans. More than likely they will remain in that state of forgottenness since the market is doing just fine with the current crop of NEW NASCAR fans. As usual the way I see it is it is just about the money.

LSC you are so right. If you want a business to pay attention start giving them money otherwise they don't give a rip what you think or say.
