It's Saturday and why do you like NASCAR

It's Saturday and I like NASCAR because, theres nothing else like it that can get me fired up, upset, dissapointed, and still tune in all week waiting for next weeks race.

Tin Can, I have to agree. Maybe it's all those guys driving the way I wish I could without getting a ticket...of course, given my driving and cycling record, it's better that I'm not out there. Seriously, it's the power and the exquisite skills these guys have. Did you see the way some of the cars in the Daytona skidded out of control, but made it through the pack and sometimes bounced back through once or twice without getting hit? The fact that the other drivers were able to avoid them at all is amazing, and I know it's something that doesn't always happen; but it's almost like a ballet sometimes. At least when guys aren't deliberately trying to bounce each other off the track. You'd think that watching cars go round and round in circles for hours would be boring, but it so rarely is. This is a sport that can leave your heart in your throat, where skill and luck seem equally applicable. Everyone knows that when you win a race it's because you were able to handle the monster you were driving and keep it both on the ground and in the groove; but what can you do when your engine blows up and you're out of the race? Nothing but pick up and go from there. I think one of the fascinations of this sport is not that it's violent like football or boxing (though it can be dangerous), but that anything can happen.

I have to admit that I like NASCAR for the wrecks. Although I wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt I would still enjoy a good six or seven car pile up. The wrecks make it fun because of the grudges that get developed and are evident in the races that come after. I guess I'm into the drama. I also enjoy watching the pit crews in action. Call me psycho.

I actually heard someone say something like this on the radio today...some jokester poking fun at a politician, about how that person had foot-in-mouth disease, something like that; don't remember the entire line. Anyway, they said something to the tune of "It's like watching NASCAR -- we tune in for the crashes."

And hey, what's wrong with that? After all, one of the big Oscar shoo-ins is about a crash. You know, the one that's not about gay cowboys eating pudding (as Cartman might say).
