Watch the "never...," old buddy. I remember, very distinctly, saying over the past half century, I'd "never have," or "don't see the sense in having..." colour TV, microwave, satellite TV, cell phone (I still hate 'em but, like the auto, they're a necessary evil), DSL, DVR, and satellite radio.
Actually, I like it because I listen almost exclusively to talk radio and many of the talk personalities are available in every area of the country. With satellite radio they are on the same time of the day, wherever I happen to be. The ones I personally like, who aren't on here in Mobile (G. Gordon Liddy, Michael Savage, Mark Davis, to name a few), I can get thru the satellite. Otherwise, here in Mobile, I'd have to either listen to the local selection, which is basically of "shock jock" mentality and thus garbage, or listen to "music" (term applied very loosely).
Yeah, I see your point about paying for soemthing which "should" be free but... alas, whoever said life is uniformly fair? I rationalized (Bob's definition;
rationalize: the art of being unfair to yourself or others without feeling guilty) that $12 a month for entertainment wasn't out of the question.
