ah-oh! PC problems

anyone know much about these.

I have an HP at home, it locked up yesterday, my wife waited it out for an hour, then shut it down manually.

when she tried to restart the thing powers up, fans run ,cd drive spin ans flash. after about 20 sec all goes quiet cept for the fans.
another thing is the monitor says no signal all the time.
I checked all connection all seem tobe good.
my wife is looking for the reboot disc, but we hate to lose all the pictures
we have on there, we haven't backed them up this year

any help, this PC is about 3 1/2-4 years old, just outta warrenty

we bought it from best buy's

thanks!

Will

Re: ah-oh! PC problems

More than likely it has out lived its usefulness. The hfirst thing I would try is to crack the case open and see if the video card (providing it isn't part of the motherboard) is loose. If there is a video card try pushing it back into the slots. I've had them come loose before. That might give you the no signal indication. After that you may have a motherboard, popwer supply or hard drive issue. There are good systems on the market now in the $400.00 range. Give yourself a Christmas gift !!!!

Maybe not dead yet.

If it seems to start & the PC seems to act like it should (which your description sounds like it is), there might be just some smaller problem. Like 1 link in the chain is broken.

1st thing to try is unattach & then reattach all the cables. Pay special attention to the monitor cable.

I'd also try attaching a different monitor. You could have a problem in the monitor cable.

Last resort: Before you trash the whole thing & lose your pictures, get someone to help you take the hard drive out & hook it into a different PC. You should be able to save the pictures somehow.

Good luck, Ross

Hey Once... make sure you ground yourself first before you poke around inside that machine. Static eletricity could cause more problems than what you have already.

Very true. Thats no joke. Make sure you touch a finger to the frame of the system prior to digging in.
