Angry Jimmie Johnson Cheating

How is it that when nascar finds a violation the only person penalized is the crew cheif. Where is the message in that. Do they believe that all of us fans are dumb enough to think the only person who knew he was illegal was the crew cheif. I guess it would be different if it were and accident, someone made a mistake. This was no mistake it was a blattent attemp to cheat.
With that being said, Jimmie Johnson shows up to a race and not just any race. His car is illegal and he gets caught. I think that Nascar should penalize the entire team. They were all involved. You know as well as I do Chad Knauss did not design and do the work his self. I have personally been there it is indeed a team sport. There is nothing that happens to that car that more than one person is unaware of.
I guess i am a bit pissed as a fan that he should be allowed to race and even given the opertunity to win. When the driver shows up at the track there is a team that has put it all together. If the Driver wins the entire team celebrates. If it is indeed the team sport it claims to be the entire team should be held responsible for its indescretions.
If you enforce the rules equally and it affects an entire organization all the way down to its sponsor, than maybe, just maybe these teams will think twice before trying to get away with cheating.

Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to GoTeamsGo.

You've certainly got a different perspective than the average fan. From my thinking, I figured it's a pretty big deal to have Chad Knaus sitting out the race. Obviously it wasn't an insurmountable penalty but should the team get completely kicked out of a race?

The cynic in me says NASCAR's not gonna want one of the popular drivers sitting out since it'll probably impact the bottom line. Fans & sponsors would both be pretty pissed if 48 was absent and that could be $$ lost.

You think it's realisitic to think they're actually gonna suspend a team for an illegal car?

Ross

It may not be realistic (YET) but it should certainly be looked at. It would be one way for the sport to take the rules a little more seriously. How many times would a team violate the rules knowingly after they get caught once. Yes the fans would be pissed but when team/sponsor sales decreased it would be added pressure to do it by the book. In an interview with Chad Knaus he admiited that it is his job to stretch the envelope. If there is a loop hole it is his job to push it til he gets caught. Is that right ??? Who knows but when there are clear violations it is time for the team to suffer.

I'd say whatever kind of work you do, it's reasonable that people in your industry are gonna push the envelope. But blatent cheating's not pushing the envelope, it's just cheating. The back window thing is just plain old cheating & they got caught.

Was reading a interview with Kyle Petty that essentially admitted that he's cheated but he says that it's entirely possible for a driver to not know about what's been done to a car. I guess I can see that it would depend on the circumstances and the individual driver.

Some of the drivers are gonna have a don't ask, don't tell policy but they expect their car to do everything possible as long as it donesnt get caught. Would you expect that's where most drivers fit?

Hey, great to see so many new faces here on the forums! A big ol' welcome to Mike and LSC!

This whole situation is absurd. Johnson and his crew get caught cheating, so his crew chief gets suspended for the race but he's allowed to run? Come on! That's like if an NFL player tested positive for steroids before the Super Bowl, so they suspended the coach and let the player play. This is no different in spirit than using performance enhancing drugs. He should have at least been held out of the race!
