| How I would fix the points system First I change the amount given per race: 1st place gets 43 - 43rd gets 1 all the way down 1 point for leading a lap 1 point for leading the most laps 10 points for leading the last lap 55 points possible per race. I haven't "tried" it out yet but I will and I'll post the results here. Then I do the playoffs the right way. Top 11 driver points are in and I start it 10 races left in the season. Everyone else gets to fight it out for 12th. Here is the change though. In the first playoff race, whichever driver finishes last out of the 11 "playoff contenders" he/she gets 11th. Next race decides 10th and so on and so on. That would be a real playoff system. The build up to the last race would be great. I would implement it in all NASCAR sanctioned series. What do you all think?

| Re: How I would fix the points system Personally I thought the way the championship was during the Winston Cup was fine, but I would not have objected to the winner of the race recieving 200 points, 2nd getting 170, 3rd 165, and so on. Basically just give the race winner 30 points more and people would race harder for the win. DO THIS AND ABANDON THE CHASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Re: How I would fix the points system I for 1 am getting tired of drivers not worry to much about qualifying. Again this weekend a chase driver qualified poorly and said they were only working on race setups. Fans pay to see them qualify, they should attempt to do better. I would like to see points given for qualifying. Say the first qulifier gets 15 point and 15th place gets 1 with 1 point increments inbetween. This would make drivers try to get in the top 15. Over the season these points could add up and make it very worth while the effort. It is easy for a good car to go from the back at the start of a race on most trcks. Lets penalize the guys for not trying to get a better qualifyong spot. |

| Re: How I would fix the points system I would have to agree that the qualifying portion of the weeks event doesn't amount to a lot. It does give the driver who tries or is lucky an upfront starting place but there are no championship reasons to make the extra effort. Another side note to this is that the 35 top drivers really don't need to qualify to get into the race so technically they can qualify in race trim. Yes, yes, yes for qualifying points. That pretty much makes it madantory to shoot for 1st. WELCOME rptc9135 to the NASCAR Forums. Great to have you here. Check out our weekly prediction thread to see if you can get the winners.

| Re: How I would fix the points system I started doing an alternative scoring method a couple years ago. I believe it rewards performance first and consistancy second, but takes both into account. Here is The Tanner System: 1st....225 points 2nd.... 200 points 3rd....185 points 4th....165 points 5th....160 points 6th thru 43rd...the same as curently used Bonus Points: Leading the most laps....10 points The "mediocre drivers want bonus points too" points (a.k.a. leading a lap)...0 IF NA$CAR would have used this system this year, and kept the playoff system (extremely popular with new fans, old-time fans either hate it, or just grudgingly accept it), After Martinsville, the standings would have been: 1st Stewart..........5850 2nd Johnson..........5822 3rd Harvick...........5812 4th Kahne.............5806 5th Kenseth..........5788 6th Burton.............5780 7th Hamlin.............5756 8th Jeffie-Pooh.......5688 9th Junior..............5684 10th Kyle Busch......5607 Seven drivers within 100 points of the lead, and a possibility of getting 235 for a win and leading the most laps... Seems closer to me than the current system Notice Martin didn't make it... Consistancy is important but [racing to]winning is more important. The only thing I can think of doing to improve things is to give all finishers from 30th thru 43rd 50 points each. This will [hopefully] stop the silly practice of having 5-10 "driving wounded" motoring around the track in the latter stages, just causing "debris cautions" (as if NA$CAR needed actual debris to call a debris caution), and generally getting in the competitive racer's way. OK...shoot me out of the water.
