Hey all ... I'm curious as to why people watch NASCAR ? I know its pretty gutsy to drive those cars at those speed but to watch a car go around and around , I just can't get into it , So what is it that has you glue to this sport ? Thanks

Heh... I guess to put the shoe on the other foot I could ask the rest of you sports fans why you bother with things like football, baseball, basketball, etc... because I hate them all. And no, I DON't Get it.

I'm a new fan to the sport...I didn't even realized I liked to watch NASCAR until this year. Helped to get a big screen TV. But then I started to really pay attention to the strategy involved. Its an interesting mind game as well as the obvious 'go fast & turn left on a big oval'. Its a lot like playing chess in some ways.

And I love cars. Delve into the history of NASCAR, its origins... 'SHINE RUNNERS!! Old hot rods. Mmmmmm, old Detroit steel.

• It's "American made" - at least up to now
• It's "team" - probably more so now then in earlier times
• It's the only sport that has time for the national anthem on TV before every event
• It's the only sporting event that openly and clearly prays to the Christian God & Savior
• It's tailgating to the nth degree
• It's the only sport that clearly and grandly acknowledges our armed forces before every event
• The automobile, the open road, etc. is part of the American dream and is more ingrained in the culture than perhaps any other country in the world
• When they come to the green and you're in the stands the goosebumps are invigorating
• It gave us Dale Earnhardt
• Driving a car is highly "relate-able" to near everyone
• The fans are great
• etc.

• Ya gotta love it

I watch NASCAR on TV so I can see allt he wonderful commercials and see Bill Weber wax poetic.

Seriously, as you ask why we like NASCAR, I ask what is so interesting about all those other sports that only require one ball.

I would have to combind SteelPhoenyx and wingkeys answer, although I do like football. And Bullriding almost as much as racing. I think their are some who are seriously born with the desire for speed. Kind of like the love of the land a farmer has, I was blessed with both. And Bullriding, thats the primative man again beast. Yeah!! lol

Hey I am not trying offend anyone and I know people here in Toronto that love it , Its really growing here in Ontario , I myself watch it a few times with the guys that love it but I can't seem to get into it ...

BTW NFL is the best follow by Hockey and MLB , Golf and Tennis puts me to sleep watching it but to play it ? Thats another thing

The past few years, I ask myself that question every week! I used to love the raw, grass roots style of stock car racing when I first started watching it in the mid-80s. But now with it being so dramatized, sensationalized, commercialized, blah, blah, blah........I really dont know why I still watch it. I still do like it for the racing..........its all the other hype and bs that goes with it that makes me wonder why I still follow it.
It just hasnt been the same with the death of Dale, and the birth of Network coverage. Today it's more about the money and ratings than anything else.

NFL= No Fun League full of primadonnas who can't play when they have a hangnail.
Hockey- I like it, I watch it.
MLB- I get better pleasure out of watching grass grow.
Golf- I like to play it, watch the highlights.

There are many reasons folks like to watch Na$car. Wrecks, rivalries, paint trading, the hope of the 48 plowing the 24 into the wall. It's just something folks get hooked on. You can't explain it.
