i'm going to start racing quarter midgets in April and i was wondering if anyone else has raced them, knows a lot about them, or can name some nascar drivers that raced them (I know many that did). Anything would help!

I hopped in a couple and hot lapped them when I was a kid........many many years ago. Of course your buddy Jeff Gordon raced them, in fact he raced at the Rio Linda California track where I watched a few races and tried to get my daughter interested, to no avail.

If you are going to be racing them, I am assuming you are under 16 years of age. I believe that is the oldest you can be, at least thats the way the rules used to be.

Re: quarter midgets

I think the Busch Bros.raced them and Kasey and his kin, seem there were a bunch more. I think a lot of the drivers are starting their kids in them.

Re: quarter midgets

Both my boys raced QM for several years. Good stuff. Set up requirements are very much like the "big cars". Panard/track bars, adjustable rate shocks, various spring weights, various tire compounds, gear selection challenges. tire pressure, --- you name it.

Interesting that since the engine is in the rear and the lower classes only drive off of the right rear tire that weight set ups become a bit out of standard when compared with the front engined big cars.

It is great, great, fun, but it does take a commitment of both money, and most importantly time. When ya wreck (and you most assuredly will), ya spend a lot of garage time during the week replacing the pieces and resetting the ride heights, weights, etc.

Enjoy! We sure did. It is "real" racing from any perspective.

that's what i've heard from other people too
and yes i will enjoy

p.s. how long exactly does it take to repair after a wreck (average)?

Re: quarter midgets

re: average time to repair

Sorry but there is no answer that would give a fair feeling for this. The range is very, very, wide. Many things play into this including the skill/familiarity of the repair person. Sometimes it is compounded by "do you have the part".

A real common repair is the front axle. Hit the wall (and you will) and the least will be replacement of radius rods. Replace radius rods = complete re-alignment of front end. Front end work completed and you'll then want to put the car back on the scales and check/reset the weights. As you can see, done right, this will take a bit of time.

Another "common" repair is simply replacing the chain on the drive gears. Good smack in the rear axle area (and again, this will happen) and the momentary shift of the axle under power causes the chain to jump off of the gear. Couple minute fix here.

Nice thing about QM racing is that the majority of people involved are ready with a helping hand which accelerates your learning curve.

In the end someone becomes a better "mechanic" and someone understands much, much more about those adjustments we see getting made in the "big" cars.
