| Re: Wahrd Buhrton Just think how even more fun this forum can be if the newer fans to the sport got a chance to see interviews, etc. on these shows if they talked to more different drivers. It can get boring if we all just have the same few guys to rag on or brag on. Since alot of fans will never get to go to see a race in person they pick their favorite drivers on what they see on TV. And you can't miss what you don't know so you would think TV would figure out if they at least talked to 1 or 2 different drivers each week the fan (and money) would be spread around. |

Since around 1980-1985, NASCAR's method of promotion has ensured that NASCAR is NOT racing competition-driven; it's personality-driven. It's less about who can drive a race car and more about who can drive a race car AND be a personality in front of a camera. I have completely lost track of the number of times I have heard supposed fans say, "I don't watch the truck series or go to my local track because I don't 'know' any of those drivers." I even heard, on XM, one "fan" argue for the insipid provisional system by stating, "I'm a Junior fan and I go to 5-6 races each year. If Junior doesn't qualify for a race, then I've wasted my money!" All this, and Brian France's sillier edicts, make me want to scream, "HEY DUDE! WHERE'S MY NASCAR?"

TV has had a series of nobodies gracing their booths; Jimmy Spencer, who, from what I hear, had his biggest accomplishment when he kept his dad out of jail for dealing stolen auto parts out of the family junk yard; Kenny Wallace who's complete idiocy defies discription, Chad Little a lawyer cum race driver who couldn't make it as either. I undertsand he's back up in Seattle chasing ambulances; and a host of others. The only eloquent driver/hack I believe they've missed was Greg Sacks, whose claim to fame was winning the Firecracker 400 in possibly the most illegal car not prepared by Smokey Yunick ever to enter NASCAR's Victory Lane. Kyle, I believe was headed for a solid commentator career before he opened Victory Junction. Give him a microphone and he's slick. Just DO NOT ask him to sing! His trying to mix driving and a CW singing career was when his driving career began its present downward spiral. I just wish that he'd retire and devote his full time to that endeavor. I believe racing AND a very deserving charity both would be better off. But then, what do I kinow? |
