Car of tomorrow Hi Folks, OK... seen the 'car of tomorrow' with its front spoiler. Doesnt favor a nice airflow. Doesnt bump drafting get around this as a viable way to make the car go faster...? My wife disagrees.... If it were me, I'd ride up close and let the air pass over the hood, rather than around the sides. Any views? Don and Pip

My opinion is... Well, it's inmaterial, but the NASCARmobile looks nothing like any stock-appearing race car I ever saw. Maybe the "S" in NASCAR stands for "Slightly stock?"

Re: Car of tomorrow Ok... so air push is the fun behind bump drafting, and passing on a straightaway coming out of a corner. Don't all these modifications take away the fun of racing...? Is NASCAR about stock car racing, or passing on the freeway...? Boooorrrrrrrrrrring!!! Donno

Re: Car of tomorrow Well... Dale Jr I think will enjoy the need for argressive driving, the bump and draft... Jeff Gordon, the whimp, will have to stay outta the kitchen if he cant stand the heat!! Yeah... its about safety and money. A boring race drops the TV ratings, and thats gotta hurt the sport! The rating figures for Kansas were down 6% versus Dover. Hey... my wife and I are Brits... its all new to us, but luvin' it! Discussion is fertile ground!

Re: Car of tomorrow Hi Quality, Cant help the new cars will be more stable, less setup dependent.... less, need to play with the springs, rubbers in or out.... They will be driving "robots cars"...... Oh... "I'm loose"... will be a phrase of the past....

(a) NASCAR has always addressed safety but a lot of drivers died of head and body trauma, but NASCAR didn't really get serious about it until Daddy Dale died in 2001. Almost as many new safety measures have been mandated in the last five years as have been mandated since 1948. (b) Read recent reports on Bill Elliott's feelings about NASCAR and safety. Ryan Newman said the same thing in 2002, but he was new to NASCAR and no one paid any attention to him. Instead of having local EMT personnel and doctors, who may or may not be well versed in the trauma routinely suffered by race drivers, Newman and Elliott want NASCAR to have a permanent medical staff which will be at each race, like USAC, IRL , IMSA and F1 all have. Much has been reported on this subject and, in my opinion, it'll take another major driver dying, not a field filler, to get NASCAR to do something about it. |

Re: Car of tomorrow Safety... its a high risk sport... yes, permanent staff of track. Yes, they need to reduce risk, but align that with the benefit in the equation in favor ofthe sport. Fast racing, fast cars... its the 'nature of the beast'.... drivers thrive on the adrenaline rush... we are not talking 'inexperience', but the need to win...

Re: Car of tomorrow Scared of a needle....? So a flip and a spin dont count...? its all about 'psyche'.... hell, at 200mph, who has as time to worry about a flu shot! Life in the fast lane is about crossing the finshing line, so you can be at the front of the queue...
