(Multichannel News) _ FSN announced plans to launch a new regional network exclusive to Southern sports fans.
SportsSouth, formerly Turner South (Fall for Turner South Transformation - 5/5/2006 5:17:00 PM - Multichannel News http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6332395.html), will be available to roughly 8 million cable and direct-broadcast satellite subscribers across a six-state region comprised of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and regions of central and western North Carolina.
SportsSouth -- abbreviated "SPSO" for TV-listing purposes -- will premiere</SPAN> at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, with a matchup between two National Hockey League Southeastern Conference rivals: the Atlanta Thrashers versus the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes. The game will broadcast live from Philips Arena in Atlanta.

SportSouth will telecast 55 Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball games in 2007, increasing to 80 Braves games in 2008. Select games of MLB's Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals will also be distributed on the network, subject to the league's territory restrictions, and the service will showcase Southern collegiate sports, including action from the Big South and Southern Conferences.
In addition, SportSouth will produce original series, specials and documentaries for the six-state region.
