I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE DRIVERS GET THE POINTS THEY DO. DURING THE RACE WITH MANY LAPS TO GO, DALE JR WAS 4 POINTS BEHIND KEVIN HARVICK IN CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS. I WAS LIKE AWESOME JR. WILL PICK UP MORE POINTS AND END UP 3rd IN POINTS AT THE END OF THE RACE. WELL NO THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. HARVICK IS NOW 17 POINTS AHEAD OF JR. AND MARK MARTIN IS STILL RIGHT THERE WITH JR. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME???
JR. FINISHED 4th, HARVICK FINISHED 18th AND MARTIN DIDN'T FINISH.

When they tell you that DURING the race it only means the points standings at that very moment. The next lap can change and ultimately the only lap that amounts to anything at all is the last lap. Much like any sport, such as baseball. The Red Sox can be leading in the 7th inning and be losers when the game ends !!!!!

Welcome to GTG WARSTAC, we'er all pretty crazy here, so you have come to the right place. As LSC said its the last lap that counts. I find if I just don't look at the box they put up durning the race with standing if race was over right now, then I don't get upset. I don't know why they do it , its really dumb and don't mean sh*t.

I went to the 'points system explained' page on the NASCAR site, and while it explains how points are awarded at the end of the race, it doesn't mention anything about the points that also happen during the race (i.e. 5 points for leading a lap, points for most laps led in a race, etc.) I'm still trying to figure out all of that too.

However, taking a look at the basics section on the nascar site is a good place to start in beginning to understand the points system. Here's the link: NASCAR.COM - Point system explained - Oct 2, 2006

I'm with you WVGrandma4Kasey. It distracting and just part of the hype where they are determined to make us all excited about the chase crap.

i hate it because if you driver crashes and you looked at the "points as they run" it makes you mad cause you see just how good they could have been and how bad they are now!
