My theory is that it would have to cease on the regular broadcast channels before any PPV would begin. Lets be realistic ... would you watch it on TNT for free (basically) or pay $39.95 to see it on PPV?? Mt guess is that most people would opt for the freebie.

If it meant seeing the race in its entirety vs. seeing all those darn commercials, I'd probably pay it. At least for the races at tracks I really liked. Certainly there would be those who would buy the whole season.

Re: The ratings for NASCAR Races

If I could choose to do PPV over watching it on NBC I would, at least for these last few races.

Re: The ratings for NASCAR Races

i'd go with the freebie because i'm not going to pay $30 so that i don't see commertials!
I'd rather see the commertials on a NASCAR race with Jr. saying "buy Wrangler Jeans" than commertials about the bowflex extreme's 30 day money back garantee!

Sure would make sense to me. It may be tough financially but I would buy a season like they have for other sports. I just don't seeing it happen. I'd be happy if I could stream something on my computer, but by the time we are given a decent service out here, I''ll probably be 6 feet under.

Re: The ratings for NASCAR Races

the way i understand, the networks pay nascar millions for the rights, then the networks get the money for the commercials. or in this case the pay per view money (split with the cable provider i guess).

not saying that a new contract wouldn't need to be hammered out (for the additional rights), but it seems to me a pay per view version isn't conceptually that different from showing a race on fox and then later on speed channel (only they would be at the same time).

oh well who knows ... good idea though.

Seven years ago race fans were crying, long and loud about wanting NASCAR on the networks because they couldn't get ESPN, TNN, TBS, etc., etc. In the future be careful of what you wish for; you might just get it.

Commericals play a big part, but I think that there is a bigger reason. NASCAR has pandered to this "new breed" of NASCAR fan who has a solid history of stick&ball. We are now in the baseball playoff season and beginning of football, both pro and rah-rah-sis-boom-bah college type. To these, NASCAR immediately goes to the back burner.

Though I hear and see a lot blaming NBS (it should be an acronym for "Nothin' 'Bout Stock cars"), I don't buy it. I guess their commercials are big bit excessive, but as I recall FOX and its band of merry idiots only had two or three races which exceeded last year's numbers?

I think NASCAR's popularity is on the wane and NA$CAR may begin to look to see where all the long-time fans, who bropught it to where it is today, are hiding.

We can only hope you're correct Bob. Question is will we live long enough to see it happen and how much more of this type of treatment can the sport actually survive through ?

You mean you don't think this "New NA$CAR," with its teenie-bopper drivers who still argue the merits of various acne creams, its team-play concept, its "I wanta be just like stick&ball" playoff format, its babysitting its million dollar phenoms in their high visability rides to keep them from having their fragile egos bruised, its "lets sabotage our feeder series for the sake of selling more over-prided seats" motto, its "rough driving" penalties, its... ad finitum...

You don't think all of that is the best thing to happen to since Miss Hearst Shifter?

Tsk, tsk, tsk... You realize that such feelings could end up in a revocation of your Brian France Fan Club membership, don't you?
