Five-time Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael is moving to four wheels as he reportedly has signed with MB2 Motorsports to become a developmental NASCAR driver, according to the
Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Before Carmichael attempts to defend his U.S. Open Supercross title this Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas, he is scheduled to make a "major" announcement at 3 p.m. local time. According to the newspaper's NASCAR source, Carmichael will compete in select Supercross and Motocross events in 2007 around a stock car schedule that could include racing in Late Model cars, ARCA races and Craftsman Truck Series.
In the summer of 2005, Evernham Motorsports Nextel Cup and Busch driver Kasey Kahne set up a test for Carmichael in a Late Model stock car owned by Evernham. Last month, the motorcycle star said he was "definitely interested in racing on four wheels," but he said he "won't every turn my back on Supercross and Motocross."
Carmichael, who turns 27 next month, said in May he planned to retire from racing full time in Supercross and Motocross after the U.S. Open. Last week, MB2 Motorsports and new owner Bobby Ginn signed Mark Martin to a five-year contract to split driving duties in the No. 01 Army Chevrolet with Regan Smith. Martin will drive 22 races next season, and he will help developmental drivers in the MB2 program.
