Until the implementation of “The Chase”, I think the BCS ranking system was the winner of the most unfair way to declare a champion. However, it is clear The Chase has it beat hands down. Even in the latter stages of most College Football seasons, in most seasons you get down to three or fewer teams in position to fight it out for the championship...if worse comes to worse a team may be left out of a so-called "title game" and finish second on the season or even be declared co-champion. In this ridiculous Chase System a driver can be atop the standings for 22 weeks and setup to dual it out with another driver who has also put together a fine season. Then in a matter of one week and one race after points are reset and one race ran out of ten...a ninth place driver leap-frogs both drivers in what is essentially a 450+ point bonus leaving one of the drivers out of contention for the championship. Am I wrong, but can anyone actually claim this a fair system? If you don't know what I am talking about...Denny Hamlin made up 450 points (the equivalent of winning three races in a row while the 1st and 2nd place guys would have had to finish last in all three races). How did he do this? He merely finished 6 positions ahead of the Points Leader. Wow! That's fair!
I understand the NASCAR socialist party just wants to sell tickets but they are destroying the Sport with stuff like this; the rule changes made to mandate gear ratios-car of tomorrow fiasco-mandated springs and shocks, etc., only point to their agenda. Okay, maybe you like the IROC style of racing but if they insist on this stupid chase system...the one and only way to make it sort of fair, is to at the minimum award them points (first through 10th) based upon how they finish in relation to other Chase Drivers. Is there any other way?

Now to answer your question. I see that this was your first post. Hopefully by now you have navigated through a few other threads and found that there are many of us who do not think to highly of the current point system or the chase. Several of us get just a wee bit cynical of it but are helpless to actually change it. I guess if we at least get to vent it makes us all feel better.

Oh contraire, mon ami. The NA$CAR playoff is one of the best thing to happen to televised sports, IF you have an MBA, don't give a damn about honest competition, and are interested only in the bottom line.If you happen to have been a long-term stock car fan and enjoy watching competition where drivers drive to win races, then your subject line just about says it all.

BTW, I like your anology to NA$CAR mimicing the Socialist Worker's Party. However, a much better comparision would be in the pro stick&ball sports. Revenue sharing, a player draft with the weakest team getting preference.

Well, what can you say. It's not really unfair because all the teams have the same chance to get to the chase. It's fair...but it's just stupid. More than likely, the top performing car for the year won't win, and that's not right.

I know this will sound stupid but please explain what "BCS" is? I completely gave up on stick&ball almost twenty years ago. I gather BCS has something to do with "Rah, Rah, Sis-Boom-Ba" college football, but I haven't a clue what. Please enlighten me.

Want yet another reason why this stupid TV ratings-motivated playoff system stinks? How about this:

Did you know that Blaney and Schrader had top tens last week?
Did you know that Blany again had a top ten; ditto for Sadler, Vickers and Yeley this week? If you didn't it wouldn't be surprising. All the media hacks want to do is rave about the Magnificent Ten and screw the rest of the field. The ONLY non-top ten person interviewed was Stewart and he's the [unable to be] defending champion!

Also, does anyone remember them reporting as to what happened to Bobby Labonte to cause him to slide backwards ¼ of the way around the track? <Slap!> Oh, silly me! Bobby isn't one of the Deserving Ten!

If I were a sponsor of one of the cars non in the "Chosen," I'd be demanding a refund on a portion of my investment. You sure don't get any face time on the tube!

I heard one reporter asked if he now thought the "Chase," was a good idea. "I do, " he said, "I saw at least 50 reporters in the news room at RIchmond we wouldn't have seen if we didn't have the "Chase." Yeah, just what we need! 50 more stick&ball retreads who know absolutely nothing about stock car racing except what they saw in Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights!

I don't think the chase is a good idea. I'm still mad about Richmond though with the Stew! They're always changing the rules every year. If it works just stick with it.

Ah..it's a mess. They use the Harris Poll, Coaches Poll, and a computer ranking that is based on five different guys power ranking formulas, to determine who the ten best teams in country are...in order none the less. These ten teams then play in the biggest bowl games. Apparently, playing one another in a playoff wouldn't show who the best team was.
