Since one of the basic components of fame is statistics there are some interesting numbers versus opinions. First I'll offer a few observations/opinions about how over rated some drivers are. While this thread wasn't started in reference to Kyle Petty his name did come up. I feel that Kyle is neither over or under rated in comparison to the others in respect to his driving ability. He has won races and he has finished in the top 10 of the series championship. He seems like a nice guy and drives a relatively clean race in comparision to todays WWF characters. He sponsors some wonderful charities and has given a son to the sport. His father and his fans (Richard's) are of an older generation so there is not as large a following as there was/is to Dale Sr.

Dale Jr. is every bit as good a driver as Kyle and maybe even better ... or so the stats say. From my perspective Dale Jr has had a better team/equipment than the Petty's have been able to come up with. I'm sure there are many good reasons for that. Better equipment generally relates to better chances of finishing better.

My theory as to why Jr is more popular than Kyle and/or many other drivers is because the fan base makes him that way. No doubt the violent death of Sr had an impact on that. Had Sr just faded from our recent memories then Jr may have ended up less popular than his father.

Now for the stats. Kyle has not done better than Jr. Kyle has been around ful time since 1981 and has 8 victories to his credit. His best championship finish was 5th place.

Dale Jr has about 17 victories and his best championship run was 5th in. Jr has been cup racing for about 7 years and has more than twice the number of victories in less than 1/3 of the time.

I like both drivers but I believe that when you compare drivers you should look at the hard evidence available. When you start tossing in the personalities you start inserting personal views. I also understand that stats aren't always a true indicator of ability but for me I'd rather make my comparisons with hard stats versus my opinion.

Morgan Shepard had 4 lifetime wins and his best championship finish was 5th. My opinion is that at best his reaction time at 130 MPH's is slow and he could be a danger in a close call.

Is Dale Jr over rated ........ yes and no. depends on what it is you are looking at.

My apologies tbalt. In one of the MANY locked Gordon threads, I thought it was you that had said something to the affect that nobody mentions how overrated Jr. is. So, I started this one so the Jr bashers could come out of the closet and have a little fun. I thought it might go 7 or 8 pages like the Gordon bashing threads do, but it didnt come close.
