Casey Atwood Returns

One of my favourite drivers, Casey Atwood, is getting another chance. David Green (the good Green Brother) has been released from his Brewco Motor Sports ride and replaced by Casey.

Maybe this is a second chance for Casey to return to Cup. Hopefully, no NASCAR tragedy will derail his chances (He would easily have been ROY but Harvick was put in Dale's cars and those cars far outclassed any of the other rookies'). Jim Smith is [thankfully]totally gone and Ray Everham has his hands full of other ventures (both were instrumental in throwing Casey under the train in 2002), maybe Casey'll have a better chance this time around. If not...it just wasn't meant to be.

Good luck, Mr Atwood. One fan thinks you have potential.

So I'm not the only one that thought he got a raw deal. Yeah he was screwed pretty bad.

Nope. I've followed Casey since he was a 16 yr old protege of Donnie Allison's, and the kid has a ton of talent.

Casey's major problem was that he had to compare to Harvick when Harvick stepped into Dale Sr.'s championship-caliber ride. If you will notice the standings for 2001, Casey finished 25th in points, 12 places ahead of his nearest competitor, Jason Lefler. 25th place for a rookie who is not in a store-bought consistent winning-capable car is quite a feat.

In the off-season after Mayfield had whined his way out of Penske, Ray soaked him up and threw Casey to Jack Smith, who has about as much ethical turpitude as Rick Hendrick (a damning condemnation if there ever was one). Then in the last race of the 2002 season, after Atwood had tried to stay competitive in a car which had no poles, and only a handful of top ten finishes since Smith bought the team from Travis Carter, he slammed Casey in the press and let him go.

Yeah, I believe all the way to the depths of my heart that Casey Atwood got the fickle finger of fate jammed tightly against his prostate.

Because of NASCAR's infamous provisional system, he didn't even have to run a lap. He had a locked position. But, thanks anyway. Casey may not be a "star" but he's a neat kid.

I think he is very talented he's just had a few problems. Bill Elliott gave him a chance but not a 2nd. I would say this will be his last.

At the risk of being labeled a "drive-by poster," I'll post this short reply:

Looked like it to me.

There are two drivers that no one has ever explained to me, to my satisfaction, why they got the shaft in Cup. One is Casey, the other is Brendon Gaughn. To dump Brendon for Travis Kvapil was one of the weirdest moves I have even witnessed in NASCAR. Somewhere along the line Brendon whizzed in either Roger's or Don Miller's Cheerios, and was dropped like a hot potato(e)?

I'd really like to see Brendon make a come back. He was entertaining to watch and to see interviewed. He's a Kenny Wallace with a non-irritating voice and a brain.

I believe your write about him pissing in someones cheerios... However I wasn't impressed with him in the cup series. He was a badass in the truck series. The only interviews that I seen him, he was an ass. Like I said though... that was the only interviews I saw. I could be totally wrong about him.

I remember an interview with Gaughn after he left Cup. He was saying how relieved he was to escape the pressure from that side of the fence. He said running trucks was a lot more fun, without nearly as much pressure to perform. It didn't sound to me like he wanted to go back to Cup.

Thanks. I never heard that interview, but it makes sense. With the money in Brendon's family, I can see him not especially caring for, or needing, the pressure of Cup.

Thanks again for the info.
