Renault's Fernando Alonso streaks under the Singapore lights to his first Formula One victory this season!
Credit: Renault/Glenn Dunbar/LAT

The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix is over, and what a wild race it was as Formula One raced under the lights for the very first time!

It all started when Nelson ‘Don’t Call Me Junior’ Piquet pile-drove his underpowered Renault mercifully into the concrete barrier. In the ensuing chaos, Ferrari erred mightily and ultimately scored no points. The foolhardy FIA stewards continued their follies as they were ridiculously slow with their decisions. And Fernando Alonso drove like the two-time Formula One World Driver’s Champion that he is.

In the end, Renault captured their first Formula One victory since Alonso won the Japanese Grand Prix for the team back in 2006, it is the team’s 34th victory overall. For Alonso, he won his first race since the Italian Grand Prix in 2007 when he drove to victory for McLaren. In doing so, he has quite possibly contractually locked himself into a drive with Renault for the 2009 season, as the team are now safely into fourth in the constructors title fight.

Alonso said of his brilliant drive and 20th career victory, “Fantastic! Well done guys! Not like yesterday, it was a good car everywhere! ” The team had struggled yesterday with a mechanical gremlin, but had no issues today. The Spaniard continued, “I’m extremely happy, I can’t believe it right now that we’ve won a race this year! It seemed impossible! We tried to make up as many places as possible at the start, and then we were very lucky! But… the pace was there.”

Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix tread

the cars sure looked neat under the lights. needless to say, it was a bit odd watching an F1 night race.

Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix tread

When your engine blows up in the lead 3 laps from the finish.... and then the fuel problem, you know its not meant to be your year for the championship.

It's unfortunate for Massa, I was hoping he would take the championship.

Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix tread

The organizers really needs to take out some of those bumps on the brake zones; it should allow a little more overtaking.

Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix tread

I missed the entire race because I was in the Dublin airport waiting for Air France to decide whether we were actually going to return to the States or have to become Irish citizens!

I remember the good old days when flying was actually fun! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

OK, would one of you kind souls please give me a condensed Readers Digest version of how you thought the Singapore race went? I find the opinions of the fans here often give me a better perspective on what actually happened than what I read in the media.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix tread

To put it short:

a] the drama and unpredictability was in the safety cars, pit lottery, incidents/accidents with little to no passing, except for the start and restarts

b] the pit exit is dangerous and some (very bumpy) braking areas are quite dangerous

c] the scenery and atmosphere beats even Monaco

d] it was a difficult and physical race :

"The drinks bottle didn't work. On lap two I tried and I said 58 laps with no water. If I tried on lap 20 it was better but on lap two it was a little bit hard."
"On the podium I was seeing red spots and couldn't recognise people."
- F. Alonso
