The opening practice session for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya S.L. is complete, and the Ferrari pair of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa easily outpaced the rest of the Formula One field.

While the battle between the prancing horse teammates was very close - Raikkonen turning a 1:20.649 and Massa just .05 seconds behind - the best of the rest was McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who was over half a second behind.

Another four tenths back was the BMW of Polish driver Robert Kubica. The winner of the Pole at Bahrain continues to dominate his teammate Nick Heidfeld in just about every session, outing, or race.

Just behind, was McLaren's new man Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn turned a lap of 1:21.758 in his silver arrow.

The surprise of the session was that Renault may indeed have taken a significant step forward. Home hero Fernando Alonso and Nelson 'Don't Call Me Junior' Piquet were a very respectable sixth and seventh quick.
