Thumbs up Andretti: Greatest Racing Family Ever

ok so its not exactly NASCAR, even though Mario did win Daytona

Mario is the greatest driver in any class that there has ever been

Micheal can hold his own

John has done well on several levels

as a whole the rule the racing world

Re: Andretti: Greatest Racing Family Ever

Whenever I hear the name Michael Andretti, I remember when he used to race at Portland Int'l Speedway in IRL or Cart when they were one series. My brother wanted an autograph from him and he wouldn't give him one. I wasn't there, don't know details but I guess he was an a-hole.

Yea, Smoke he was probably in a mood! To me though that would turn me off on a driver pretty quick! But the Andretti family is a great racing family!

Great yes but not what I'd consider the greatest. Petty's, Wallace's, Earnhardt's, Bodine's, Nemecheck's, Jarrett's, Allison's and I'm sure many others. That would be a good poll question.

Don't forget the Unser clan. They'd have to be in the discussion.

Oddly enough after I posted that I looked at it and determined the names I listed were basically NASCAR families. Not being an open wheel fan I don't know many of the family groups in other types of cars, plus I'm sure there are others in NASCAR.

Al Unser
Little Al
Bobby Unser

they raced Indy cars
Little Al semi retired when he became an alcoholic i believe it was (maybe a drug addict)

of course open wheel has many other racing families

the Villeneuve's
the Mears's
the Foyt's
the Schumacher's

Some of Mario Andretti's stats
Four-time Champ Car National Champion (1965, 1966, 1969, 1984)
Formula One World Champion (197
Daytona 500 winner (1967)
Indy 500 winner (1969)
Three-time Indy 500 pole winner (1966, 1967, 1987)
Three-time 12 Hours of Sebring winner (1967, 1970, 1972)
USAC National Dirt Track champion (1974)
International Race of Champions titlist (1979)

i would put that up against Richard Petty any day

Re: Andretti: Greatest Racing Family Ever

just to add to my case for the Andretti's

"in Milwaukee, Michael, John and Mario completed the trifecta dominating the podium for only time known in motorsports history for a family to finish first, second and third respectively."

Re: Andretti: Greatest Racing Family Ever

A.J. Foyt is another great example of family racing. A.J. even won in both series. Too many great choices out there. The Andretti's are definitely in the running.

Would be delighted to!

Al Unser Sr. -- Al Sr. is one of three people to have won the Indianapolis 500 four times. His 646 laps led there is a record, and he is the oldest person ever to win the Indy 500 (he was 47 at the time). Al Sr. was the 1970 and 1983 Champcar champion and the 1978 IROC champ. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1991 and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bobby Unser -- Al St. is the oldest driver ever to win the Indy 500, and the guy whose record he broke was his brother Bobby's. He won the race at the brickyard three times and is one of just two guys to pull off victories in three different decades (60s, 70s, 80s). He also won the 1970 IROC championship. Bobby Unser was enshrined in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1994.

Al Unser Jr. -- "Little Al" won the 1992 and 1994 Indy 500s. When he won the IROC championship in 1986, he was 24 and the youngest ever to accomplish the feat. He won the title again two years later. He had retired, but recently announced along with Michael Andretti that he's going to run the 2006 Indy 500.

It should also be noted that three other Unsers -- Al Sr.'s brother Jerry and his nephews Johnny and Robby -- have also competed in the 500. They also have another record all to themselves. Al Sr. is the only person to have won the Indy 500, had his brother win it, and his son as well. Not sure how to describe it... I guess they're the only Father-Son-Uncle/Brother combo to ever all win at Indy.

Re: Andretti: Greatest Racing Family Ever

Some of them at least must be "married, grandson's, grandfather's, yada, yada, yada but I guess that is nothing connective between the three of them !!!
