| Six-time Indy 500 starter Karl dies Jerry Karl, a veteran of six Indianapolis 500 starts, died Feb. 16 in Baltimore. He was 66.
Karl's six "500" starts took place between 1973 and 1981, but he was at the track on an annual basis between 1970 and 1985, trying to make the lineup. Karl's highest finish, 13th, came in the rain-shortened event of 1975.
