| Would the Race of Champions work in the U.S.? The ROC has never been contested in the United States. The brainchild of Audi rally champion Michèle Mouton and Fredrik Johnsson, the ROC has made its way recently from the Canary Islands to the Stade de France in Paris and now to Wembley. Could this event work in the U.S.? Can race fans wrap their heads around guys named Mattias Eckström, Petter Solberg and Sebastian Vettel as much as they can Travis Pastrana, Jimmie Johnson and Michael Schumacher? And would it be a true ROC if Brazil and Colombia and Mexico were invited to compete? What about Japan or Korea? Sure. Because in the end, this under-the-radar, invitation-only gathering of warriors has one element that courses through its vein: Competition, pure and simple. -- Auto Week Dutch Mandel: Chase the Race - AutoWeek Magazine |

| Re: Would the Race of Champions work in the U.S.? The question is asked "Would the Race Of Champions work in the U.S.?" and I answer YES! We're a nation with racin' in our veins. Whether it's foot racin', dog racin', horse racin' or car racin', we just seem to love racin'. Heck, some folks even race cockroach! Not me, I ain't interested in it and if I was to watch it, some of the competitors might not live to reach the finish line, if ya know what I mean... I don't think the names are a problem: seems I remember we have about every kind of name on our roles now. I don't think there's another country in the world that can claim having citizens from of every language and nationality within their borders. Let's see, we have mud drags, swamp buggy races, sand drags, desert races, rock crawls, endurance races (24 hrs of Daytona & Baja 1000 to name a couple), world speed record events at Bonneville, hill climbs, frozen lake races, snowmobile races, road races, dirt track ovals, speedway (the motorcycle kind and the stock car kind), dwarf, legend & Allison car races, quarter midgets, midgets, sprints, winged sprints, Indy, Champ car, Formula "whatever", rallycross, rallies, sports cars of every description racing including some "old timer" races, replicar, stock car, NASCAR, circle track and straight liners, figure 8's, school bus, 18 wheeler, and ambulance races. And I'm sure there's still a dozen I haven't mentioned like Monster Trucks, lawn mower, and go cart races. So why in the world would anyone ask whether a Race of Champions contested in different types of cars, equally prepared, on parallel, equal length tracks driven by the top drivers in the world work in the US or not? Seems like a natural fit to me! As long as ya don't let any sanctioning body (NASCAR, FIA, etc.) screw it up, it's bound to be good racing, and get lots of people watching. What else could you ask for?
