| Croom named SEC's best Four years ago almost to the day, Mississippi State University's Sylvester Croom made history when he became the Southeastern Conference's first African-American head football coach. On Wednesday, he made even more. Twelve days after his Bulldogs finished with a 7-5 regular-season record, Croom was named the SEC Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches and The Associated Press. It was the first time a State coach received the AP honor since Charley Shira in 1970 and the first time a State coach received the coaches' award since Wade Walker in 1957. "It's an honor, and I'm very humbled that I'd be considered for such a high award as that," Croom said. "Especially considering the quality of coaching that we have in our conference, for my coaching peers and competitors to think enough of me to grant me such an award, I really don't have the words for it.
