STARKVILLE — Six players, a hodgepodge of contributors and backups on the Mississippi State football team, posed for the photograph. There is an offensive lineman, a wide receiver, a defensive end and a trio of tight ends.
At first glance, it's merely a picture of six teammates being teammates. Wearing suits, they're mugging for the camera on their trip to Jackson in July for a visit to a children's hospital and a fan event.
But the photograph's significance could hardly be overstated.
It's a picture of the last six players remaining from Jackie Sherrill's 2003 signing class, the last before his 13-year tenure as the MSU coach ended later that year. It's the final link from Sherrill to Sylvester Croom, the fourth-year coach who took over the program and has the Bulldogs on the verge of their first winning season since 2000 heading into Friday's regular season finale.
