| Croom, in fourth season, sees ship come in after weathering storm Not quite four years ago, Sylvester Croom was announced as Mississippi State's coach and CNN and ESPN cameras beamed the news of the SEC's first African-American football coach around the world. Croom, to his credit, made no bold promises about victories and defeats and certainly not about bowl games or championships. He knew the up-mountain struggle he faced. He was honest; he was direct.
