Croom expects spread option from Gardner-Webb

STARKVILLE — Those looking for comparisons to the offense Gardner-Webb will run in Saturday's game against Mississippi State need to look no further than what Auburn did last week, MSU coach Sylvester Croom said.

When true freshman Kodi Burns entered the game, replacing Brandon Cox in the first half, the Tigers ran a version of a spread option offense. That's what he expects out of Division I-AA Gardner-Webb this weekend, too.

Of course, MSU didn't exactly defend Auburn's attack with Burns with gusto, at least in the first half. Croom said he'll harp on his team's open field tackling and fits on option responsibilities during practice this week.

More than that, he's just hoping his team takes care of business.
"I'm sure they'll come in with the David versus Goliath mentality, looking for a big win," Croom said.

Gardner-Webb coach Steve Patton, whose team did not play Saturday, said his team worked on MSU during last week's practice.
