— About the time Steve Slaton and Pat White combined to turn a once-promising fall afternoon at Scott Field into another loss last October, Sylvester Croom had an epiphany.

No more of this White for 44 yards, touchdown West Virginia. No more Slaton for 27 yards, first down West Virginia.

Enough with the funny business. He knew then and there, as he stared helplessly on the sidelines with the headset, something had to be done.

"When that quarterback and that running back started running down through there, I said we've got to have somebody at free safety that can stop the deep ball, can tackle that guy of West Virginia out of the backfield, get him on the ground and make them snap the ball again," Croom said Saturday.
