In each of Mississippi State's three losses in this young season, there has been a common theme: too many State turnovers, too many deflating things done by the opposing team after they were committed.
The third loss came here Saturday night, a 42-31 setback to 25th-ranked Georgia Tech (4-1) in front of an announced 50,035 on a perfect fall night at Scott Field.
If only State's execution could have been as perfect as the weather. The Yellow Jackets scored 21 points off Bulldog turnovers, and for the third straight Mississippi State loss, returned one for a momentum-swatting touchdown.
"That's coaching," coach Dan Mullen said. "That falls (on) my shoulders. We'll get that fixed."
Five games into Mullen's reign, State's offense seems statistically healthy. On Saturday night, the Bulldogs outgained Tech in total yards, 487-479. State (2-3) didn't punt; it's only the fifth recorded time in school history that has occurred.
Problem is, the turnovers played a big part in that. And they negated a lot of the good feelings and had State playing catch-up all night.
