Which do you think is the more important measure of Olympic success: total medals or gold medals?

Total medals..... shows you were there and took it to the end.

I agree. More total medals = more world class athletes. If you have all gold, but not as many overall medals, it shows that you only have a few elite athletes. Give me the country with the most Top 3 depth any day of the week!

i will tell you something that impresses me to a degree .... warm weather countries getting medals in the Winter Games ..... any medal at all .... thats dedication

Total medals show that they can excel in various sports. Gold medals, on the other hand, reflect how passionate a player is in his/her sport. But talking as a country, i would go for total medals rather than gold medals. We may not be recognized as the best but we still have something to be proud of.
