Re: Greatest Sports Family

wow slim pickins for hockey.
I say none of the above.
My vote goes to The Sutter family from Alberta.
Brothers Brian, Darryl, Duane, Brent, Rich and Ron Sutter, reached the NHL in the 70s and 80s. Brian, Duane, Darryl and Brent have gone on to become coaches and general managers as well. A seventh brother named Gary is said by his brothers to have been the best hockey player of all of them, but he stayed home to work on the family farm. He later won the lottery. Rich Sutter is quoted as saying the only reason that Gary didn't make the NHL was girls.
Collectively, the six Sutter brothers have played over 5000 games and won six Stanley Cups.

The second generation of Sutters are coming up through the WHL and two having been drafted by the Flames.

Re: Greatest Sports Family

The Sutters are a good choice! Two of em played for the Flyers at the same time.

I voted Pettys.

Thier 255 wins and 10 Chamiopnships are pretty impressive.

Some folks will tell you that they shouldn't count, since it isn't in the "modern" era for the most part, but I don't buy it.

Re: Greatest Sports Family

I voted for the Manning but here is a sleeper that nobody but me will have heard of, the Gracies in MMA.

I don't have time to tell about all of them, so here is a link. Fight Finder - Mixed Martial Arts Statistics

My vote goes to the mcmahons. Vince, Shane, and Vince Sr. They built a monopoly for the wrestling world, they are brilliant.

If he you want to go combat sports, like I said the Gracies there are 20 of them with pro fighter profiles on Sherdog or even the Shamrocks, Ken is a UFC Hall of Famer and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, Frank is a former Middleweight Champ in both UFC and Strikeforce, then there is also Ken's son Ryan who has a 1-0 record and is currently signed with EliteXC.

If you want to play the combat sports game, can't beat the Gracies or the Shamrocks.

Re: Greatest Sports Family

Great idea for a poll! Tough to make a pick because when you have only one pick, with so many great family names, it's a challenge!

I picked the Mannings. Archie never got close to the crowning moment of winning a Superbowl in his career but because of his lineage, he has produced not one but TWO Superbowl-winning sons! It's tough enough to win one Superbowl in a lifetime, to have both your sons win one each will probably not be duplicated anytime soon!

Re: Greatest Sports Family

I went with the Petty's. What they accomplished they pretty much did as a family in a family owned business. Plus they have done so much outside of that business too.

Re: Greatest Sports Family

Far too many good choices, Steve. Having completely forsaken Stick&Ball in '87, some of the families were unfamiliar to me.

It broke down to a choice between the Manning Family and the Petty Family. Trying to be completely objective I took into account family issues and activities off the playing field.

With Petty's continued refusal to have any alcoholic beverage sponsorship, despite their financial problems, Kyle's and Patti's Victory Junction venture, the way Richard and Kyle have changed the way NASCAR deals with its fan base, and other things, I had to go with the Petty's. But the Manning's and the Andretti's are also certainly deserving.
