Cool Barbaro breaks leg

Did everybody see that yesterday? Very tough to watch. I feel so bad for the horse. As of this writing, they still may have to put the horse down. I'm a horse racing fan but it makes me wonder if racing is the right thing to do with horses. I wouldn't call it cruel because it's a natural thing for horses to run, unlike the circus. I will not see a circus because that's just cruel. It's just not natural having an elephant standing on his 2 hind legs. I'm surprised more of these animals don't lose it more often.

I also feel really bad about what happened, I just hope they can save his life. My feeling Is they should have scratched him after he broke out of the gate. I've seen horses do this on occasion and they would always scratch them. But this was the Preakness and he seemed to be okay, I guess he just took a bad step. Such a shame !!

Re: Barbaro breaks leg

In dog racing, if a dog gets loose before the race, much like Barbaro coming out early, he is automatically scratched. These horses are born and bred to run, and injuries are part of the sport. It is a terrible shame to happen on a stage such as that. There is little chance of this horse being saved.

Cool Re: Barbaro breaks leg

He has 3 breaks in his leg. Needed 23 screws and a metal plate. If it was any other horse, he would have been put down on the track. They say he has a 50/50 chance of surviving.

Re: Barbaro breaks leg

That was totally horrible! I feel so bad for poor Barbaro, I hope that he will make it!! I'm with the Pundit, I like to watch horse racing also, but is it really such a good idea? Yes, it's natural for a horse to run, but when they are put into a "gate" and sent off at the same time, that's where the natural part loses it.

Re: Barbaro breaks leg

Paper reports that the surgery was successful and he "practically ran back to the stall".
They said it was about as bad as it could be. They said he was very brave.
Three broken bones in his right rear leg. It only says he is very comfortable. here's to his recovery.

The last thing I heard was that the horse keeps on Improving daily, He's walking on that leg and doing all the things the doctors want him to do. So that is very good news.

Re: Barbaro breaks leg

It looks like Barbaro isn't out of the woods yet. He's gone through his 4th surgery and keeps developing infections. This is part of the reason they rarely operate on horses. They develop infections very easily.

Cool Re: Barbaro breaks leg

It doesn't sound like Barbaro is going to pull through. His trainer rated his chances of recovery as "poor."

Re: Barbaro breaks leg

All the veterinary help in the world is not going to save this poor horse in the end. Sad to say, but they should have euthanized him and saved him the suffering folks.

He also shattered his hoof in over 20 pieces .

Yes in the old days he would be dog food,,,,but modern medicine has come so far. If they can beat the infection he could get a prosthetic. Worst case scenario, they will salvage his sperm (PG) prior to his passing.

I will pray for him. I am glad he has the best that can be provided.
