Cool Re: Useless Olympic Events

Now, now guys, I happen to like some of these events...I even know something about them if you can believe...

At first I wasn'tto keen on Rythmic Gymnastics...that is until Alina Kabaeva (Olympic Champion shown below) showed me the error of my ways...its actually a pretty cool (in a girly sort of way) sport...and yes, I am secure enough to say it it's cool...

The Shot Put is a plain classic feats of strength event...a throw back to the days of Gladitors heaving large heavy objects to show who is top dog...and the US does darn well at it...

My favorite Brian Oldfield perfecting the "Oldfield Spin"...a technique which involves rotating like a discus thrower (the spin). In the spin, the thrower faces the rear, and begins to spin on the balls of his left foot. As he comes around and faces the front of the circle, he steps with his right foot into the middle of the circle (always keeping in balance and with velocity toward the front. Finally the thrower reaches for the front of the circle with his left foot, twists his hips and shoulders like in the glide, and puts the shot. (US -Randy Barnes shown below)

Trampoline is fairly new...so I have yet to develop a taste for it...

Re: Useless Olympic Events

Hey, now LSC... no dissin' the shotput. I used to do that, ya know.

As for how we trained, well, there were heavier shotputs we used. Not bowling ball sized though, at least not at the prep level. The key was all in the motion. You need to get enough momentum up so that by the time you make your turn, the shot just kind of launches or catapults off your neck. We were always taught that the quickest way to fail was to try and throw it... it's more of a pushing motion.

Shot I was good at... discus is another story...

Re: Useless Olympic Events

Now you are trampling on something WE do well.
We do well at synchronised swimming, though, and I HATE it. Ditto moguls.
Shotput has massive history, I can't say a bad thing about that.
You, GDK, must be confident in your manhood to admit the whole rhythmic gymnast thing. I'D feel like a sissy saying it's cool.
My vote?
Speed walking. Yes, I'm sure they train. Yes I'm sure they are fit and committed.
They just look silly.

Yeah...I am secure enough to admit that rhythmic gymnast is cool...

I don't totally understand the whole things...still lost on the whole scoring system...its not like regular gymnastics where I actually know some of the moves etc...(which btw, while in early college I use to go photograph meets just to meet girls... ...always had an angle...)...but the Olympic competition was cool...that girl Alina Kabaeva has an atititude...I don't think the other competitors like her...she lost in 2000, and won in 2004...she seems pretty stuck on herself...Mostly it seems that its for gymnasts that are more into ballet then tumbling...heck, I've said too much...got to watch me...super hero tights and all...

I would think Speed walkers with the whole hip action is more sissy looking...though I have been passed by some speed walkers in 5KM road races...those freaks can sometimes go under 7 mts a mile...it sucks when you are running and they pass you...totally sucks...you feel like tripping them...

You guys ever see when they get disqualified in the Olympics for "running"...that is so funny...they want to go faster and they accidently run...

As I hope you can imagine I was laughing my keester off when I wrote that post. I can't say I admire shot putter people but it does take determination and great desire to heave that ole' cannon ball.

Re: Useless Olympic Events

one of the biggest problems i have is with the events that have judges

it can be so different from one judge to another

almost like an ump's strike zone

the right girl smiles at the right judge and it could be worth a tenth of a point or so

i like the timed events

the stopwatch doesnt lie

You would think...during the Moscow olympics the Russians opened up huge doors in their stadium that caused a tail wind for their Javalin throwers...

Oh, and the right smile is worth at least a tenth of a point...come on man...

I'm all for clocked sports too. only way it's fair. skating was and still is - dancing is still fixed- ridiculous.
bobsled rocked last olympics.

Maybe they can have speed dancing...the teams speed up the songs and race the clock?

I agree 100%. When the fate of whether you win or lose relies upon the judgement of 3 biased, often compromised dolts, it's a major problem.

Re: Useless Olympic Events

Same with American Idol. They have three judges and they eliminate singers quicker than you can say "1...2...3"! I think one of them is the nice and the other two or mean. I don't watch the show too often but I'm up-to-date with the media.

Hey, the stopwatch isn't always right. It depends if you have multiple people starting it because on person can start it a millisecond earlier. If it is a close race you want an accurate time for the record books. Catch my drift?
