If you're squeamish, you might not want to watch this video of the finish line at a high school girls' cross country race in Ohio. About a minute and a half in, a girl takes an awkward step and falls, breaking her leg. She tries to get up and run but tumbles to the ground again. And then she crawls across the finish line:
The girl is Claire Markwardt of Berkshire High School, and she's my choice for Sportswoman of the Year. She finished that race on a broken leg even though, her coach said afterward, "
she heard it crack about three times while she was running."
Toward the end of the video you can hear a PA announcer asking for the EMS squad, presumably to take Markwardt to the hospital. A commenter at the
Northeast Ohio News-Herald says she was supposed to be the maid of honor in her sister's wedding that night. Instead she was in surgery
